If your pup has high prey drive and has a favorite toy, perhaps someone playing with it on the far side of the pool would encourage the dog to get in and swim across by him/herself (with you there as a safety). You might consider rinsing the pup off with clear water after the pool to avoid skin issues from the chlorine, or diarrhea from licking the chlorinated pool water out of his/her fur.

Had a Siberian Husky that saw ducks or geese on the far side of a lake we were walking by . . . she pulled me halfway across the lake before I could get her turned around (she was on a 25 foot lead). She had never been swimming before, so I wasn't expecting it. Her prey drive was absolutely nuts. She also fished in a stream, but was well enough trained to drop the fish when told to do so.

Back to the OP topic. . .

Never thought about doing hips before any specific type of training before, except jump or rapelling due to the possibility of a hard or awkward landing, and since my current GSD was intended for law enforcement and I hadn't originally intended on breeding her . . .

Went to NC last week and there was a little lake and she loves to play fetch in the water! It was SO cool watching the first time she swam. She looked kinda surprised and eyes got wide, and then she just took off lol. My wife and daughter were cheering for her. We had to stop throwing it because she was tired but didnt want to stop. By Friday we were chucking the stick pretty far. Hope this will translate to the pool!
