Hired Dog

by Hired Dog on 21 December 2020 - 05:12

The National SAFE KIDS Campaign recommends that children not be left alone before the age of 12.
There is NO WAY I am leaving a 7 year old home alone, never mind to look on a dog that just got here and I know nothing about.

Also, leaving a dog outside alone to bark and carry on all day is rude to neighbors.

I have taken many dogs to basic obedience classes, not sure if this is an option with the current pandemic. a good one teaches you to train the dog as well as getting the dog exposure to the outside world.

an ecollar is not a good option, in my opinion only, for someone not experienced in training.

there are lots of youtubes on obedience, which might be a good place to get some understanding of what is involved. it really depends on what a person is able to translate into positive/negative experience in real life.

sending the dog to an outsider, again imoo, will be mostly wasted as the most important part of the process is the owner understanding good training, not the dog.

hope this helps,
Rik

It was asked that you don't know where to start...That's a very easy question to answer...ANSWER: The Beginning...
What is the Beginning: It's getting to know your new dog and having him getting to know you...It's called "Bonding"...
I Import dogs...dogs of all ages...Usually young adults and adults...When they get here...most of the time I don't really know what they know...SSSSssssoooo I start from the very beginning...I put them on leash and walk them...For exercise and to go to the bathroom...Everything you do is a Bonding process...If you can play with them this is great...Whether or not they show interest in playing with a toy I would still play with them with toys (Balls...Kongs...etc.)...I would feed them a bit out of your hands and stay there while they eat...
I give the dog usually 2 weeks to become pretty used to being in their new environment...To learn where things are and what goes on in your place...
Take things slow and let the dog tell you when to move on to the next phase of training...

So I wrote a reply and it disappeared..

Starting over 😩

Okay guys, I know I may sound like I don’t know what I am doing but I would not take on something I wasn’t ready for.

First thing first, I would never leave my child alone. Let alone watch the dog.
I would never leave the dog alone in the back yard. He is not an outside dog, and it would put him in way to much stress. Plus my neighbors would not be happy.

As for crate.. well he surprised me today. He did very good in the cage. He cried for 5 min or so and went to sleep. I have camera to watch him so I saw no destructive behavior in there whatsoever. Just whining in the begging. And it wasn’t a full day either. Just few hours. I may dedicate a room just to him. We will see. He hasn’t made a mess yet. He seems to be well trained there. But if he does, then he does.
I have aK9 handler come and check on him while I’m at work for now. In the future will see what else can be done with him. I’d love to not to have to crate him, but I need to trust him first to do so.

Bonding part is the big one. I have great bond with my other dog, and he knows me. I don’t have to say a word, he gets me. I aim for the same with Max. He already attached to me. Not enough to trust him but we have a great future. I do walks, plays, rubs and rest together. While on the leash. I engage him in everything I can. I see that he started to respond to his new name. Or when I say “here”. He is a very smart boy. I don’t want to stress over his training just yet. I understand that it’s too soon. Until he sees me as his master, I’d be hard to archive anything.
As for ecollar, it’s my last resort. I hope I won’t have to use it on my baby.

FWIW, E-collar is a great tool that helps with clarity, boundaries, bonding, and communication. There's no reason to look at it as "last resort." It's one of the first things I teach any dog that comes to my operation. I credit the e- collar with being able to call them off running deer/squirrels/critters, keeping them calm and non-reactive around other dogs, and ensuring clear and consistent communication.

Problem with him door-dashing - friends of mine had this issue. They got an electric fence system, and put it just outside the door. Of course, the dog had to wear the electric collar all the time, but it solved the problem.

The wife taught music lessons, so they had visitors coming and going constantly who wouldn't know about the dog's tendency to bolt out the door. And unlike an e-collar, no remote was needed to prevent the dog from escaping.

PLEASE make sure the dog is micro-chipped and has some sort of ID on his collar, so that if he does get out, it will be easy for people to figure out who owns him!

Max39, one of the best ways to build the bond between you and the dog is for you to hand-feed him everything scrap of food he's going to get, for the about two weeks. Just you and him, off away from the rest of the household activity. It gives you time to get to know each other without either one making much in the way of demands, while still giving you an opportunity to start establishing boundaries with him.

Max you said, " He already attached to me. Not enough to trust him but we have a great future. I do walks, plays, rubs and rest together. While on the leash. I engage him in everything I can. I see that he started to respond to his new name. Or when I say “here”. . Looks like he's settling in considering you've only had him 2 days!!!!

"He is not an outside dog, and it would put him in way to much stress."
