To be honest, a lot of times I know that a dog has HD before even the owners can see it from watching the dog and knowing what it looks like and how a dog moves. BUT and here is the big BUT. There are dogs where cannot see "it". And dogs that move weird and are actually clean. You can't be a 100% right ALL the time. And thats coming from someone who has a pretty darn good track record. I have about 80% accuracy. Pretty good, right? But what about the last 20%? And thats why we xray.

I had two dogs where I swore up and down that there is something off just from the way they are moving. Turned out with Good Hips and Elbwos. And I still swear there is something not right. Could be the back... could be knees, could just be because they are cramped in a crate thats too small and they are sore coming out. Something is off. I can see something in their movement that's not right but it ain't the hips because they got OFA'ed. Who knows, maybe they should have been Pennhipped instead?

Years ago I had a friend that wanted to breed her lab, we owned a stud that was OFA fair with normal elbows, mind you this was when we were first starting out.

So, we noticed how agile her girl was, jumping over gates and such and thought, she should probably pass her ofa's.

So we bred her and she had 6 beautiful pups! After the pups all went to their new homes they took her for ofa xrays, and Wow!!!!

The vet said, we've never seen this before, the bitch had NO sockets for the hips to go in, she just had muscle holding her up, they said they were

surprised she could even walk!!!!

So, ya, unless you have x-ray vision, you really can't tell just from the outside.
