What's wrong with calm in a kennel? Depressed from separation anxiety? That doesn't make much sense, to me, ie, the term "anxiety" to describe a dog who is laid back when kenneled. I think you're looking for problems that may not be there because she's caught you off-guard, in that she's not what you expected maybe? She sounds like lots of totally unexposed dogs that breeders keep a year and then sell, never having seen the inside of a vehicle, the outside of the property, or anything else for that matter. If that's the case, she's doing fine and time heals all wounds, provided the genetics are sound.

What's the pedigree?

"...she'll see me as a pack member." that phrase drives me nuts.....You are the human, she is the dog. She will see you as her master, not another dog. One problem with raising dogs in a pack, is that they don't develop a connection with humans.
Being quiet in her "kennel" (do you mean her crate?) is not a bad sign. Since she was raised in a pack, it will take time for her to adjust to not having the rest of the " pack" to lean on....she now has to stand on her own four feet and twelve months is late in life to be developing individuality as opposed to "pack" orientation.

About 9 years ago, I brought home a rescue, a 3 year old male GSD, most likely of 100% working lines. He'd had very little socialization and spent most of his life tied to a chain in a rural area.

On the way home, I stopped to show him off to a dog-loving friend. She'd bought him a toy, and he happily chewed on it, until I went to take it away from him so we could go home.

He growled at me and wouldn't let go. This being the days when everyone was into Alpha rolls, I pinned him to the ground, and took it away by force.

We got along fine after that. He is now 12 years old, and stil has a great full mouth bite and plays a mean game of tug, despite his teeth being badly worn and his rear end arthritic. I never did schutzhund with him, because I knew nothing about it at the time I adopted him.

Now, THAT'S the sort of behaviour I'd much prefer to see in a newly adopted dog that has good potential for schutzhund.

My 12 week old registered pup showed similar drive for toys. The first night I had her home, she and the male rescue were playing with a ball. After awhile, things got very quiet. I looked around for the ball, and couldn't find it. When I searched a bit harder, I found the pup was hiding it under her chin!

Even to this day, she will sometimes 'possess' toys and hide them in her crate. She will also often fall asleep with a ball in her mouth. Now, THAT'S ball drive!  And she is not the sort of dog many people would expect to have a lot of drive, as she is a cross between American show lines and German show lines.

SS, the difference is, this little female has been supposedly raised in a pack and not been socialized on top of it.
I have some dogs, male and female, here that if you attempted the "alpha roll" with them, you'd end up changed for life. Definitely not a maneuver I'd recommend with a dog you don't know and definitely not with a dog that's growling at you (intended as advice for inexperienced readers).

By the way, "raised in a pack" would disqualify your breeder as being "reputable". That is, if you are talking about a GSD and not a Fox Hound.

Yup, Joan, the Alpha roll is definitely NOT something I'd try today!  Teeth Smile

The father is from the same kennel as my pup.

Great breeder but not DDR.

As I see it your pup is at least half west german working lines.

I got my dog as an eight week old puppy and she was anything but timid right out of the crate.
