Hired dog, I didnot like the way those cops handled the sitution also,

and you see if the dog stays on the bite, he is an easy victim for a criminal with a knife

Duke, exactly right, which makes me wonder why was the dog deployed. A suspect with a knife gets dealt with by a cop/s with a gun.
Maybe its just me Duke who is allergic to having my dog stabbed, but, I know for a fact I would not allow it to engage a suspect with a knife.

Black Malinois, I believe you and its only getting worst.

In the early 80's I heard an old timer say, "let those who ride, decide", I believe that this rule should always apply.

Apple  my last X Dutch Shepherds / Mali are around 90 pounds
and 68 cm height.

But size don,t quarantee the quality from a K9 thats for sure and a 55 pounds  X mali is very rare for a male what I see on the fields here that must be  females. The average male is around 70-75 pounds

Speaking of knife fights. Bojar received a ‘that-a-boy’ on the call I mentioned with the stabbings. It was hispanics at the end of the track. The Asian was the one at the apartment.

As HD and Dule said, dogs and knives don’t go well together.  It usually ends up the perp bringing a knife to a gunfight and that can get ugly fast.

This is off topic but it’s a crazy call where a guy pulls a knife on himself.   We were in the area after checking on an open door at a business alarm.  The officer goes out on the guy and has him empty his pockets on the hood of the police car.  I get there and he goes to put the guy in handcuffs and the guy grabs his knife.  Right away we draw our firearms and create distance.  He then puts the knife to his throat and holds himself hostage.  I have seen people put knives to other’s throat, but this was the first time I seen it to their own.  Can’t make this stuff up.

Emory, similar incident took place a few years a go south of here. Guy naked, standing in front of an apt building, on the sidewalk, holding a knife to his throat.
Officers trying to talk to him while a SWAT guy goes around the block and comes up behind him with a stun gun...the knife guy was hit hard enough to drop like, well, like someone who got stunned.
Arrested and Baker Acted if I remember correctly.

GK1,
Because KNPV is designed to be a pre selection sport for police dogs, historically, there was some outcrossing to make sure the dogs didn't end up too small because they were being bred for police work. I am not saying the outcrossing for size is something that is happening in recent years. I don't think there are any quality Rottweilers or Great Danes left that the Dutch would want to add to the Mal X gene pool. Both of those breeds are now totally different than what they were developed for and have largely lost their aggression which is desirable in a police dog, even though I keep hearing the Dutch are breeding away more and more from aggressive dogs and selecting more for dogs that are very social and have extreme hunt and prey drive. It is just an example how historically a particular sport leads to selection for a certain type of dog. Just like the French Mals tend to be smaller because they are often trained in ring sport which requires very high jumps/climbs over and off obstacles. I'm sure Black Malinois could give more accurate information on the use of outcrossing to different breeds.

@ apple
The basic blood lines in KNPV malinois comes from the Belgium ringsport
the NVBK  here they crossed also some other lines in their dogs like the Belgium Mastiff, here we see sometimes wider dogs with bigger heads  .

Than in WW 1 and WW 2 dogs and money was scarce so they bought dogs from farmers and mix this sometimes bouvier des flandres,German Shepherds,Dutch Shepherds , Rottweilers, doberman all this dogs have influence

Later in the 70,s and 80 they mix some Great Danes in their lines
for bigger size , the experiments with the pitbull starts in the 80.s and 90,s
oficial its not allowed train and certified a pitbull for PH-1,
I have seen myself some experiment pitbull cross mixes on a KNPV club  many  years ago  , today this not gonna happen experiment with pitbulls

Only German,Belgium ,Dutch Shepherds,rottweiler,dobermann,boxer,Groenendaeler
bouvier,Schnautzer, airdale terrier and crosmixes this breed are oficial alowed

Today the working quality from  most Rottweiler,Doberman,Bouvier ,Boxer,Groenenendaeler is poor
they don,t need this anymore in their  bloodlines.

Than the market and society is changed all over those years , police and military need more tracking dogs and detection dogs than bite dogs because tracking and detection is by far more important than bite dogs tracking dogs has the most cases, so what they  especial need is very social dogs with high prey and hunting skills.
