I know nothing about pedigrees but really trying to learn. I have seen some videos of Javir Vom Talka Marda being a great dog in Shutzhund. He’s in my dogs pedigree as well. The mothers side of my dogs pedigree looks weaker than many but love how my dogs turned out.

So appreciate these video's of the mostly gone hero's as most of us will never be able to see them. Thx for sharing these. A reminder of how great these dogs really were.

DirkDaner, I’m familiar with the topside of your dog’s pedigree and some of the dogs farther back on the mother’s side. You saying, “love how my dogs turned out” is the biggest compliment any pedigree can get. Nothing speaks more of a pedigree than the dog in front of you.

What kind of changes do you guys see after first heat? She is ~7 mo, so I guess it will be soon?will her temperment change? So far she is confident, social, sweet, and feisty! Hope it stays. Kyree is our first gsd and first unaltered female.

What kind of supplies do you use for heat? Is it messy? How long does it last? Will our neutered Male be affected?

StayCivil : Despite some 'old wives tales', I have known females keep exactly the same temperament after they mature; I have also known some that did not, but not necessarily for the 'bad', or by much. All dogs are different, all dogs are individuals.

For the same reason I cannot tell you whether your neutered male will be affected, I don't know your dog. What I can tell you, having lived with A) a kennel with entire males present, and B) a kennel where all the males were neutered, is that in some cases the entire males seemed bothered by the fact that female kennelmates were in heat, and others not at all (unless actually presented with an accessible bitch in season !); and in some cases the neutered males seemed to notice, but others did not.

I currently live with one neutered male; he wants to hump the little (neutered) designer crossbreed bitch next door all the time ! Cos he 'lurves' her; he's not so interested in doing this with other females. (Although he does occasionally reveal that he is not entirely faithful to his first choice...) He is easily distracted from this habit, although one does come across from time to time neutered males who will actually complete a tie with a fertile bitch. I've known other castrated males who never showed any interest in the mating condition of bitches (familiar or strangers). Something to do with testosterone levels, I expect (you know that hormone is produced elsewhere in the body than just the dogs' gonads, right ? - at varying amounts).

[It is however IME only a quite rare dog who is SO upset about being around a bitch in season that it acts negatively on his / the bitch's / your sanity; so while OWNERS OF ENTIRE MALES should be aware the worst can happen and maybe have some boarding out arrangement in hand, most of the time you need not worry, just be alert and CAREFUL !]

As to the 'supplies' question, I hope someone else posts. I have only known entire bitches when kept in outside kennels (all female housedogs have been fixed); other than being aware that some people find a need to put some sort of 'pants' on in-season bitches, and that such things are commercially available (although some folk save money by adapting human underwear). All I ever needed was a mop.

Thank you for replying! Seems to be an individual dog type of thing. I did a little online research and it appears to vary greatly between dogs.
Not sure if gsd have any particulars I need to be aware of but I guess we'll see.

At what age did your females start first heat? I read that smaller breeds start younger so not sure where gsd falls. Also, how long between heats for gsd in your experience?

My trainer was telling me that her girl got sweeter with her but more defensive of her as well. Was curious how many see that with their ladies, and what else folks notice.

I dont think she will put up with diaper, it will get shredded and maybe eaten, but I definitely need a plan.

Well it may turn out you need diapers less than you anticipate - some (although I'm afraid by no means all !) females keep themselves so clean, you may have opposite problems, being sure they are 'in'. Obviously you probably get a better fit (so less slippage and chewing) from the commercial 'pants' than you'd get when you just cut a tail-hole in a pair of knickers.

First season for GSDs not uncommonly occurs from around 5 months of age, but yes, again all dogs differ, and I have known bitches not come into 1st season until a year old. And have often heard of some who were later than that. If it got to 18 months and had not happened, a visit to the vet would be on the cards. But given what I said above (and particularly if there is no interested male dog around) some seasons can be 'silent', and may have been missed by owners. Perhaps despite their physical appearence GSDs are a highly 'domesticated' breed, so they mostly follow other domestic canines in having two seasons per year, unlike some breeds more like feral dogs, and wild species, where once per year is the norm. Having said that, there are GSDs reported out there who come in heat less often; also occasionally I have heard some get in heat more often and squeeze in 3 seasons in 12 months, but I'd say those were very much the exception rather than the rule. What it is more important to remember is that it IS NOT EVERY 6 MONTHS like clockwork; a bitch may establish a pattern of every 5 months, or every 7 or 8 months. Most that I myself have had dealings with over the years have been pretty average/'normal' in that regard.

Coming into season works a bit like average ages in different breeds; because the GSD is a medium-large sort of breed, bigger than many others but much smaller than some of the 'giant' breeds, its average lifespan currently stands at a bit over 10 years. If you compare that to some small terriers, spaniels, dachshunds etc, where their lifespan is reckoned at about 18 years, you can see that yes, size matters. But these are only averages. Almost all the GSDs I have cared for have lived beyond 10 years, with most passing 11 or 12 and some up to 14, 15. Unless taken early by disease. I have heard of GSDs reaching 18 years and beyond, despite breed size. Longevity can run in families of dogs, so its in the genes (and worth enquiring about re the ancestry of a dog).

Honestly can't comment further on the temperament thing; all intact bitches I've had daily contact with have been sweet natured with the people they knew, at least, and stayed that way. Not always so tolerant of other dogs (males as well as females) during or immediately after season but that didn't usually last for long / become a permanent problem.

Thanks. That is all extremely helpful! I think she may be coming in to heat. She has been a little less energetic and the fixed Male has been sniffing her more.
