The last couple Gsd I have owned one I just had to put down for Dm and a 9 yr old female I still have , And now have a 8 month old Male have all been the working line Gsd I guess you could call them Straight Back , high Energy big bone Czech working line German Shepherds , We were out to one of our breeders that just had pups and is selling what we didn’t know was Slant back Showline Gsd , the female was breed in Germany then shipped over , The the dad stayed there but the mom came to US after she got pregnant, Good looking pups , But I’m not real Fond of the Slant back GSD , when growing up our family always had the working line Gsd , From what I read Slant backs are prone to hip Dysplasia and their back legs are shorter then their front legs , as where the working line is Vice versa I’m not really using the dog for show , Can anyone tell me what they preferred better in a GSD?

Stick with what those that you know until you have taken any time to learn about any other German Shepherds.

Straight back versus slant back or legs are shorter, really

Raising my hand to ask a question:

Are their legs actually shorter?

by Movin64 on 16 October 2020 - 18:10

Yes fromwhatv I have read , Look it up , do a search on Showline GSD Vs Working line that’s what they are saying Showlines have longer legs in the front shorter in the back , To where as Working line have longer legs in the back and shorter it the front , When I read that I never knew like I said I just wasn’t fond of the look of them almost dragging themselves, But then again lots of people like them , That’s why I was asking because I have never owned a Showline GSD

Reading from what you've said...I would tell you to figure out what you want a German Shepherd for...I mean what are you wanting to do with one...Just a Pet...a Working Dog...A Show Dog...What?
Then ask your questions...

I can't see any difference in "slant back" in "show line" vs. "working line." That's just what GSD look like. IMO the show lines have much straighter backs; working lines tend to have more roaching. But, again, they all look basically the same IMO.

Depends which "Show dogs" you are talking about. Here in the UK where Germanic / International type 'breed' dogs are now in a majority, both in general life and at Dog Shows, (so THEY have become our 'S/L' since the 1980s) there are aesthetic problems because some people see a slight upward curve to the topline as being biomechanically inefficient / ugly / making dogs prone to diseases, e.g.HD. etc. Actually no empiric evidence for any of this (or of shortened hind legs), although I agree the more exagerated examples (with spines that really seem 'roached', or are 'hinged' or drop off at an angle from mid-spine - a minority of dogs) IS 'ugly'.

Our UK-bred older-style dogs, often referred to as 'Alsatians', have a more 'level' spine, especially when (as in AKC S/L ) they are posed to lengthen and straighten it so that it looks like a ski-slope. [Myself, I find that equally ugly.] That does not comply with my (& many others) reading of the Standard; but it is, as a preferential conformation, okay - providing that spine does not in fact DIP in the middle when the dog is in normal stance. Now that could well indicate a spinal weakness; but for disc trouble.

I am not sure there is a proper way to address this question. I am half convinced its a baited one, I mean, no one would actually believe that a dog is produced with shorter legs on one end on purpose...right?

This is like being told - as I once was in a dog newspaper - that there was a 'fashion' for deliberately breeding dogs with a 'tilted pelvis' to achieve the German look !
So I don't believe it either. They would probably look very odd when they walked along, Hired, wouldn't they ! Does not sit very logically with what we know HAS happened, which is some breeding for a longer second thigh - which if it had made any difference to overall leg length, would seem to make the rear legs longer, not shorter - it doesn't of course 'cos its all about ratios.

not making any accusations at all, but HD made a pretty good observation about a baited question.

I wondered that also as there once were posters very expert at setting up WL vs. SL
folks and it could get pretty rowdy. I think that mostly the SL ran out of excuses, I know I did.

just from my perspective, I haven't seen these dogs with shorter legs on one end either wl or sl. nor are the sl usually "slant" back except when in the exaggerated show stance. that's taking into account that the wither should be higher and sloping into the back.

all the stuff about HD was debunked long ago and is not really worth discussing.

to Movin, I think the best suggestion was to stick with what you know. past that, if you trust your breeder, discuss these issues with them.

jmo,
Rik
