I thought I read on here the White Shepherd and German Shepherd pedigree database were going to be combined?

The White Shepherd Dog has their own database and also some of the white German Shepherd Dogs are in the German Shepherd Dog database. They both can connect to each other as the White Shepherd Dog in the past did not have their own recognized breed. Only the Berger Blanc Suisse \ White Swiss Shepherd Dog and UKC White Shepherd are now in the White Shepherd Dog database and the rest of the GSD's who are colored white are in the GSD database.

Okay. Thank you. I got a little confused because I know I've had both white and colored German Shepherd in the past. Therefore having two different things like that threw me a bit.

Basically, some breeders took a colour variety - an unrecognised colour variety, since from the beginnings of the GSD breed white was seen as a fault or 'highly undesirable' - that 'they' liked, and developed it into a supposedly separate breed. It took them a while, and the world's Kennel Clubs were initially reluctant to recognise the WSS/BBS as a distinct and separate breed. There isn't a huge physical or temperamental difference: there are many examples of the German Shepherd who exhibit the same constructional outline as the WSS dogs; there are many, showline especially, GSDs with the similar 'softer' nature.

What the 'new' breed has been fairly consistently successful with is fixing the 'black' pigment around mouth & nails, and maintaining generally darker eyes than are normally seen in white-coated German Shepherds. And in sales to people who like big, white, often fluffy, dogs.

What is generally not spoken about is that the breeding it took to get there, i.e. combining the genes of white carrying dogs, led at times to some extremely risky line breeding that took virtually no account of health discoveries over the same developmental decades.  -  For more, read PDB items archived on Epilepsy, White GSDs, Coats & Colours breeding.

There are still plenty of white coated (both standard and long haired) GSDs in this world - one is lying at my feet as I type this. But it IS going to be difficult to always tell which dog is which breed; so owners of WSS ought to be very diligent about their paperwork, and get their dogs DNA'd for identification purposes as the separate breed.

Anybody know what is happening re other strains of generally 'unrecognized' white dogs, e.g. the Canadian White Shepherds, around the planet, since more Kennel Clubs now accept the White Swiss ?

Not sure what you mean by unrecognized.  Dogs born in Canada may still be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club as GSD color white, and also with the United Kennel Club as White Shepherd or GSD  (depending on the pedigree).  They may also be registerd with AWSA as WS.

The names "Canadian White Shepherd" and "American White Shepherd" were names given to the breed in countries other than the US and Canada...In these two countries the breed is known and recognized as the White Shepherd.

I'm sorry, Whiteshepherds, the 'Net leads me to believe that "Canadian White Shepherds" can be Registered as just that with the national Canadian KC, no matter that white dogs can still be registered under 'GSD' (as indeed they still can here in the UK).  If that is plain wrong [these days ?] then I apologise for being led astray !

Who knows what the other 'CKC' chooses to do, i don't really count what dogs commercial companion registries regard as breeds (and often as not they eventually 'follow the herd').  I DO know that 'The Kennel Club', Shades Smile, of the United Kingdom, has never accepted the "Canadian White Shepherd" as a Breed, in the same way as it did not do so with the WSS / BBS up until 2017.  I do realise that the FCI already accepted the WSS for some years;  however, there are a number of smaller national Kennel Clubs around the world which are not FCI members, and which tend to be guided mostly by what the UK's KC decides to do about such things as recognising new breeds - so I wondered if anyone knew anything about those, in regard to the 'Canadian' variety as well as the WSS ?

I think the funniest thing is UKC recognition:  a new breed which has often as not been sold on the fact that it does NOT require the intense input of exercise and training that a working lines GSD requires to keep it healthy and sane and a good family dog / companion was quite early taken up by a Registry which boasts about its primary aim being to keep the working abilities of breeds alive ...

Does Whiteshepherds or anyone from Canada happen to know what the Canadian Kennel Club is planning to do, now that the WSS is more widely accepted as a breed ? Has it / will it register WSS/BBS as yet another separate white (GSD) shepherd breed; or amalgamate somehow its WS records with the WSS and start registering them as that ? Could get confusing for all-breed Show societies ?
