I get what you mean. Yogi. IMO it would be hard to come up with a pass or fail test for your specific breeding goals. The more I think about it, the more I think that the SV is the way to go with this breed. At one time I wasn't so sure that titling, breed surveying etc was important. Now.....I'm not so sure. It's not a perfect system, but it is consistent and better than the AKC's way of just breeding willy nilly based on personal likes and dislikes.

"SL people do not usually post here anymore, Joan, that's an undeniable fact. The forum today is pretty much dominated by WL people, another undeniable fact. Why?"
I certainly hope you're not referring to me as I was in show lines for more years than most people here have been in the breed. At some point, however, I realized that it isn't possible for an average person with one or two dogs to realistically compete with the monied interests in that venue who have strong alliances with big German kennels. I have shown my dogs at the national level and it's always the same...dogs bred and/or handled by German judges almost always win because the judge at any given show will likely be showing his dogs under those people in the near future. There are occasional exceptions but it is mostly an exercise in futility for normal, non-connected people. I still like the dogs, still like the way they look and move and love nothing more than seeing a show line with a good, solid work ethic. Having said that, I like to train more than anything and I think that anyone who does will probably eventually gravitate toward working line dogs.

"You are 100% right you have the right to say what you want within reason but somehow trying to blame dead dogs/overpopulation on one small subset of people seems to be extreme."
Is it? Where do all of those dogs come from then? In Germany, you will virtually never see a litter of GSD's bred without the requisite titles and breed surveys both because people there believe in upholding the standard and because there is no market for dogs that haven't proven they can meet it. I would expect there are similar breed-specific requirements for most breeds in that country. Guess what you don't see there? Shelters full of unwanted dogs and cats and animals being euthanized by the millions. I have been to a shelter in Germany and it was mostly empty; this despite it being against the law there to put down a healthy animal. I've said it before and I'll say it again...the difference between them and us is that they have a sense of community responsibility that we do not share. Yes, this is America and yes, we can do what we want but the, "it's all about me and what I want," mentality has predictable consequences in any society.

Actually, blitzen, I never mentioned 'biting', that is not a be all end all for me. Although it is a part of the 'package', a whole lot more goes with it. As for what I think is appropriate test, read yogie's post...I responded that I do the same...so's not to be redundant.
