I have seen many beautiful dogs on here..BUT I thought American Bulldogs were not suppose to have a black coat? Am I misinformed? How does a predominatly white dog end up being BLACK? I am super curious how that works..

There are two different types of black marked bulldogs. Those that are patched, being white with large black patches and those that are black because they are crossed with pit bull to get that color. Up until a few years ago black was a disqualification. But some people liked the mostly black dogs and they got the breed standard changed in some clubs. Hence the current inclusion of black dog.

Follow the pedigree of this dog and you will see an APBT american Pit Bull Terrier way back on the family tree. That is where the solid black started  in that line.

Here is an example of a dark brindle dog that has a black and white father. Jackpot. I know because a friend of mine owned Jackpot and i saw him many time. He tended to throw very dark patched pups.

on this dog if you chase down the mothers side you will find a pit mix at the very bottom of the pedigree.
That truth is pit bull terrier was added either by accident, or because they worked as hunting dogs, or just because someone whated a black bulldog.
Hope this helps.
