I was searching on pedigree data base here and i found a dog on here that had this wrote after its name.ofa: dyplastic (mild, moderate, severe).

I was wondering what this means. i never saw this on anything i've ever came accross.  i was looking to buy a dog from someone and i did a back ground check and this was on the great grandmothers side.

it was the great grandmother who had this.  can you please tell me what it means?   should i go ahead and buy from this person even though they are offering a health gaurentee.  i dont think they know this becasue the person was an open book and answered all my questions in very good detail.

and gave me there vet's number to check them out.
thank you to all who respond.

It means that the dog is dysplastic.  The database here unfortunately does not allow us to choose which specific dysplasia rating the dog has.  It's just all encompassing.

If the great grandmother was dysplatic then i would ask to see the parents rating from OFA. If they don't have an OFA rating of good or better i'd walk away.
Because while no one can truely garuntee the furture health of a puppy, they can stack the odds in their favor by only breeding to dog that are clear of this genetic diease. Also ask if the dogs are NCL clean a nervious system diease, and ICH clear a serious skin diease. Who is the dog with the dysplatic rating?

One thing I've noticed in several top titled dogs in Germany is that several of them are listed as noch z, so even in Germany some breeders are breeding dogs with HD. Personally I'd never do it, but I have seen it on several pedigrees here.

NZ translates as "still permissable" -- it is considered a passing rating. There are a number of very important dogs that are only around today because NZ dogs were bred.

For anyone who wants to see whether a dog has passed OFA and what their rating is, you can go to www.offa.org.

Thanks for clarifying that Blackthorn!  I thought it was mild HD. My bad.  Yes I've looked up dogs on OFAs site many times, it's very helpful and handy.

Nz does indicate the presence of mild Hd but also indicates the dog still acceptable for breeding. It could be what other systems may rate as borderline, fair or even a failing grade. So you are not entirely wrong cmills.

With the new web site, exact HD and ED results and even numbers can be posted on a pedigree page.

Thank you all for your replies.  I did talk to the breeder, After they saw what i saw, they didnt realize that was in the history of there dogs. they reduced the pups and are selling on a spay and neuter contract.  They told me that they didnt know. the breeder they got there dog from told them that it was fine.  that there was no history of it.

I been fortunate with my dogs.  no one that keeps in contact ever told me of any health issues,  no allergies reported either.  That;s what i like to hear.   I told them that i would be looking else where.  there not selling there pups on here.  i just happend to find a dog listed on here from the pedigree that i saw.

thanks again.
