Shelley Strohl

Just becuae I don't sign petitions doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. Notice in the video Ronaldo was one dog who DID adjust his grip to get the full bite bar on the attack on handler? Then he came full spped, hard and full grip on the courage test. Now that's a good dog. His guarding is also very cconvincing, in the blind and after the out... something I always take into consideration, as after the out is when a lot of dogs fall apart out there on their own.

Karo is an excellent dog, as is Ronaldo.  I have worked with a few Karo progeny and loved them, and hopefully (fingers crossed) I'll have a litter from Ronaldo soon.

I have also used Santo von der neuen Welt and Yacco Vallendarer Hohe with my Jaguar Mausespitz daughter with excellent results. Santo produces very hard dogs, maybe not suitable for a young handler, but I would definitely use him again if I wanted a nice working dog for myself.  My 12 year old has a puppy from my Yacco litter, and they perfect for each each other. She's a happy, confident puppy with great drives, just a natural in her obedience and an easy dog for her to handle.

I thought Voltan Gletschertopf looked good on video, and I would also look into Yash Bastillie, a really excellent Hill son. I love my Jaguar daughter, her work ethic is awesome, such a shame Jaguar is no longer with us.  I have some bitework video of her on youtube:

As far as imports go, I have seen some really impressive dogs going through the K9 program, notable ones out of Zamp, Erasmus, Campino Piste Trophe, and Ando Altenbergerland.

You can find a good working showline if you take your time and do your homework.

Go work him and watch this dog move.  Very nice dog and was very pleased with the progeny I got to play with. Excellent temperment with good drives.   Would put any object i threw nto the mouth, punctured an unopened can of soda and got happy when it sprayed.  Just cant say enough good things about this male.

Hi AKVeronica,

I know that you are probably knowledgeable enough to recognize a good dog at work when you see one, show or workingline.

But my suggestion to you is this:  contact the helpers that worked these top showline males at events and ask them their opinion.  They see and experience the dogs from a very different perspective, not just from video clips.

Most will talk openly about their impressions of the dogs if you hold the conversation in confidence.

Best of luck to you!

I wasn't talking about you, Shelley, it was just a general comment.  I was told you signed that petition.  I didn't even know you were into SL's, thought you were strickly a workingline sort of gal.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Veronica,

Perhap ignore altogether ANY dogs that were "declared" for Universal Sieger who have NOT trialed in a USA trial and are not scheduled/expected/likely to be in ANY USA regional (a condition to compete in the USA Nationals, along with a 270 score).   That certainly separates those who used that "declaration" as nothing more than advertising hype.  On the Sieger thread, despite repeated queries, NOT one of the owners/handlers/trainers of the VA dogs affirmed having even any plans to actually follow through on that Universal Sieger "declaration."    How many of those VAs or Vs have trialed AT ALL in the last couple of years?   We know Ravi's dog achieved another title after  SS--how many others have trialed to obtain that qualifying score?

I have heard this male is outstanding in the bitework,  from someone who breeds working lines dogs and isn't easily impressed. I love that he has been tested longcoat free and is everything you can ask for in a dog. It's a shame these strong males are not used more often.

I did sign the damned petition--used my real name (not anonymously)--and am proud of it.

I'm sorry, folks, although one of my boys is included on the short list of SL males who can work and can produce working ability, I'd truly likely to dissociate him from several of the specimens some of you thought worthy of inclusion.

Sorry--Shelley, for all your experience, you're dead wrong about the about the importance of the out. According to Günther Diegel, head schutzhund judge for the SV, the crucial "moment of truth" is what he terms the "transition phase"--which occurs after the lock-up and before the out. It is this phase that reflects everything about the dog's character, drives, mood, clearheadedness, nerves--and his relationship with his handler. Either he's got it or he doesn't--no faking about this phase.

It really sucks when a helper deliberately locks up with his back towards the judge so that he is unable to view the lock-up, the transition phase, or when the dog pops off the sleeve during the stress of the drive.

Yeah, yeah--I know--as someone pointed the other day in the Master's thread, I should keep my opinion to SL's--as if I have no knowledge of the sport or of the skills/genetics/training involved.
