Red Sable

by Red Sable on 25 May 2009 - 22:05

This isn't the first coon I've rescued, actually it's my fifth.  Yes Uberland, they are all different.  Males grow up much fiestier IMO.  The last female I had never got cranky.   I teach them to catch crayfish, and as coon are scavengers, they do well around here, lots of corn fields.  We have a creek on our property, if this little gal wants to stay with us, she is welcome, usually they move on after a year old.  I don't cage them, just when they are little for their own saftey.

Good for you Red Sable . Good luck with the coon . I have a habit of finding baby skunks. Always a dilemma what to do with them .

The lady where I boarded my horse had a coon baby for a little while, then it got big & ran off. We would give the baby a bowl of water to wash her food in, it was so cute, & such a smart little thing, we gave it a sugar cube to eat, & it washed it, & of course the sugar cube dissolved in the water...well, that baby looked everywhere, under the dish, padded all around through the water in the bowl trying to find that sugar cube, trilling the whole time! When we gave the little one a second sugar cube, she held it for a second, & then ate it straight away, it didn't make the same mistake twice! But when it got bigger it was restless & destructive, so they began letting her out, & taking her to the creek to get her ready, & one day she just didn't come back. My hubby had one that was a regular Houdini, would let itself in & out of the house, & would steal peanut butter & jelly from the kitchen cabinets, making a huge mess in the process!
She's adorable, & your dogs are so good with her! It's funny, I read an amusing article about rabies this morning...it said our pets fare better than we do in an encounter with a rabid animal, as they're vaccinated against rabies routinely, but people aren't, & our primary means of infection is being bitten by an unvaccinated animal like a raccoon, or sometimes by aerosolized urine spray from flying bats! Ewwww! And then they said, of course, that flying dogs are somewhat unusual, so not to worry about urine spray from your pets! I lmao! Anyway, enjoy your pretty baby! jackie harris

I've heard that coons don't have saliva and require water to be able to eat.........

good luck, hope she turns out to be a sweetie.

Thanks guys, she is alot of fun, and they are very smart, very stubborn too!  Right now she is sitting on my knee and her little feet haven't stopped feeling me.
This little coon is the most contented one I've ever had, some can be squawky, but she is quiet and just happy to be held.  I'll get another pic of her in a few days so you can watch her grow.

That must be true about the saliva, because they do 'wash' everything before they eat.

Great photos.
Found two little baby racoons last year in the flower bed.
There were there for 24 hours on their own.
The mother must have been killed.
Good luck with that new little baby.
