There is a study going on to develop a genetic test for megaesophagus.

Genetic Study for Megaesophagus

This research project is conducted by Clemson University. Your participation is greatly appreciated.

  • Congenital, Idiopathic Megaesophagus Clients ONLY. Primary focus is German Shepherd Dogs but all breeds are welcome at this time. Dogs MUST have been diagnosed at a young age. (Note: Dogs with acquired Megaesophagus may not participate in this study.)
  • Contact Dr. Leigh Ann Clark at lclark4@clemson.edu
  • Dr. Clark will mail you a kit to complete a cheek swab of your dog. You will need to mail the swab back, per instructions, to Dr. Clark at your expense. (Note: You will need to pay the postage to return the sample, approximately 2-3 stamps.)
  • The goal of the research is to identify the genetic basis for Megaesophagus so that a genetic test can be developed to allow for the identification of dogs that are capable of producing mega pups prior to breeding.

As always, donations are accepted by Clemson University to further veterinary research. Contact Dr. Clark at the above email address.

Very interesting Lani. I hope many will participate in this study as it will only better the breed in long run. If a DNA test can be developed as with DM that would be fantastic. I realize the study is likely in the early stages, but in time hopefully it will prove worthwhile and beneficial.

windwalker18, That is so awesome! What a kind heart you have! I don't know many people who would take on a dog with ME. May you be richly blessed for your kind deeds.

Starr... Klytie has been one of the best dogs I've ever owned.  We do therapy with her @ a Senior Psych Unit.  She's very gentle and alerts to health issues for anyone she's around.  I get migranes, and She knows immediately... When Bev has High sugar she lays across her in bed to keep her warm (the only time she does that) and "bridged" for me when I was injured in a truck crash. (once I was able to get out of a chair without her help she stopped offering.     You might call her a diamond in the ruff... (Rough) She is the Blessing!
