let me clarify: Kraftwerk assured me that the dog would be ok with cats; i was told "not to interfere nor get involved with their socialization". "LET THEM WORK IT OUT". how can you not blame the kennel and blame me when i asked {and paid handsomely} for expert advice and was told erroneously all would be ok. NOW after all these messages i can plainly see the kennel should have considered me a low-level moron who needed careful, expect guidance ----AFTERALL I PAID ENOUGH FOR IT!!!! Kraftwerk BLAMED MY CAT!!!!!!!!!!!! and kept $3000 for my trouble. without knowing any facts you all are judge and jury. i didn't ask who should be blamed, i asked if anyone had a similar experience!!

Why did you pay so much for the dog? I may have missed that part. Their puppies are way too much for me to consider and I have a top sport line pup for schutzhund. JacK

The moral of this… if you’re a cat person who’s searching for a GSD… for god sakes don’t get a working dog who’s known to have high prey drives… If the dog has prey drives... He will more likely to harass or even kill your beloved cats. Diana7788 why do you not want to answer to my questions? My questions were “If you don't mind me asking, why did you go to Kraftwerk kennel to buy a dog and what was the purpose? For the sport or for a pet?” You blame the kennel and you blame the dog.. But yet you don’t want take on the responsibility for the decisions that you made of allowing both dog and cat run freely inside your house together.

you are making assumptions here. i am not blaming the dog, not for a moment. the breeder, told me let them work it out, not to interfere. i followed his instructions...to the death of my cat!

Sounds like you are new to the GSD world and thought the people selling you a dog would take care of you. I can assure you that while there are many breeders who would have advised you correctly their are just as many who will take advantage of you especially if you have alot of monies to spend on a dog. Being naive will cost you alot of heartache and money. You would also be wise to find someone you can trust to go with you to look at the dogs and even the parents if possible. I have been to dog shows and seen "Show quality" dogs peeing all over the floor being scared to death and still place. Even working dogs sometimes are "babied" in order for them to title. Take your time, know exactly what kind of dog you want and be very picky, most litters with good parents have one or two higher level dogs and the rest or average to low quality. Be careful you don't have someone sell you a pup as high level just because it's parents were. If you want pet quality you should pay much less for it. The advise to stay away from working lines is very good if you are wanting it to get along with a cat. Even then unless a pup is raised with cats you may have problems. In closing I would say in many cases the pet quality dogs are the best choice for many people. Good luck to you...

If the kennel told you the dog gets along with cats why shouldn't you believe them. If they said the dog gets along with children and upon introduceing the dog to the child it attacked the child, guess everyone would be singing a different tune here. I import dogs from Germany and get profiles on the dogs. Everyone that had on it gets along with children, cats, other animals did just that. Guess the people I deal with are just honest that way. Diana- I would not have advised you to just put them together, dog would have stayed on leash and introduction slow. But you followed the experts advice. The kennel guaranteed that the dog gets along with cats. It did not. How can they justify keeping $3k of your money. Brittany- Don't make general statements about working line dogs. I have 4 at home now that get along fine with cats and yes they are high drive. I have 2 showlines that would love to kill the cat.

I second that - 3 working-line dogs here, and 3 cats - the 4th just died of old age (21 years old) - another is 17 this year - lived their whole lives with high-prey drive working line dogs in the house, not separated, not always supervised. The cats are used to the dogs, they don't run when the dogs are around. If they did run, they would be chased, but the dogs know the rules - they don't bite. I don't think there is a difference between show line and working line here - or cattle dog, or jack russell terrorist - if the dog has high prey drive and no bite inhibition, training or socialization with cats, then there is a problem and a possible dead cat. If the breeder/seller of Diana's dog told her the $12,000 dog was safe with cats, then the dog should have been safe with cats. IMO the breeder/seller is liable for the cats' vet bills and death - I'd be contacting an attorney for advice, to try to get the $3000 back if I were her. molly
