Kaiser1979

by Kaiser1979 on 25 June 2007 - 02:06

I was playing with my almost 6 month GSD in the backyard(a lot longer than usual) and all of a sudden he looked like he was picking up his front paws and setting them down on the ground over and over while he was walking then he just kind of fell and he was moving all of his limbs in an awkward way.  He kept trying to get up and he couldn't.  Finally, after a few minutes he got up and started walking normally.

And ideas?

Thank you

Could be going trough Pano. In such a case it will get better over time. Often starts in the front.

Watch for heat related issues. In such cases cool them down SLOWLY and provide gatorade to help replenish the system.

Chances are if they are walking normally again a sprain, maybe a bite, a pulled muscle. If you fall or are exercising heavily and you become exhausted your body will show it. Doesn't sound like anything I'd worry about to much.

Some rest in the crate, and maybe a leash walk or 2 to be safe and if problems still show consult a vet. But don't promote excessive exercise until you know your pups okay.

Good luck.

Shannon

Sounds to me like a possible epileptic seizure, which is not really that rare in the GSD.  I have seen it before.  When it goes away, it is almost like it never happened, except the dog is scared and thirsty (from being hot because of all of the muscle and nerve spasms (like an electrical spasm thingy).  If this it what is was, it may never happen again or may happen more and more frequently.  When and if it happens again, if you are with the dog, do not get excited and panicky.  Instead just comfort the dog calmly until it stops (goes away).  When it is happening to the dog, the dog does not understand and is panicking because it doesn't understand why it can't stand up, so it is your job to help keep the dog calm until it is over.  Your vet will want you to keep a record of how often it happens, because a certain frequency of attacks will require medication.  One or a few attacks will not require medication.  I had a GSD that had one attack in it's entire life (thank God) and I researched the subject.

I truly hope the best for your dog.  I am only guessing from what you described.  I am not a vet.  Consult with yours about this, for sure.

I agree with Do Right,  sounds like a Seizure,  and possibly even a spell of Hypoglycemic seizing,  we have seen that sort of thing at the shelter when people bring young pups in on a long trip with no food.

See a Vet Right away !!!
