I just bought a new  red and black male pup, It will be 3-4 weeks before I bring him home,Kevin Murrtal is grandfather, Rikkor Bad Boll  gr grandfather, on mothers side and Ursus vom Batu and Ulk von Arlett on fathers side. I plan on breeding him in a couple years with my female who is Karly Arminius and Ursus Batu line also. I am planning on both pups going to school where I am concentrating on SAR . I am focusing on getting both dogs titled. Any thoughts on the two???

Cart before the horse. Focus on raising the pup. There is approximately a 5% chance that he will be breed worthy. Divide that by the likelihood that he will be a perfect complement to your female. While they come from good lines, that is no indicator of their own future greatness or specific attributes. Stud dog ownership is a long shot gamble. That is why a good stud often sells for 10's to 100's of thousands of dollars. You buy a pup for a few thousand and take your 20-1 gamble with some educated guessing that he will be breedworthy or the 50-1 gamble that he will outshine his own father. I do not wish to discourage you. I commend you for taking the interest and steps to involve yourself in the breed. Please understand that breeding choices are made with the best and most complete set of data among mature dogs that have proven themselves in structural conformity, health, movement, and performance. For now all you need to think about is imprinting and bonding with your new pup and raising him up to be a healthy dog. Best Wishes, Jonah

I am very excited to be getting this pup. The woman I am getting him from is great. She calls me and updates me, sends pics and is just all around pleasant on the phone.

The father looks like a longcoat to me.

The father looks like a longcoat to me.

He is. Not meaning to sound harsh--but you are buying a pet puppy from untitled parents from a "breeder' with good PR--I guess.

I am focusing on getting both dogs titled.

By all means, train and title them--they will love you for working with them--they may do quite well in SAR. However, please do your homework a little better before breeding your two dogs to each other. Even the breeder (Omega Shepherds in Montana) of the sire of your pup does not title her dogs. Just buys dogs from well-known, titled parents, breeds them, and sells their puppies for Family Protection, Personal Security, Schutzhund, Search & Rescue, Guard Dogs, Seeing Eye Dogs, Professional Dog Training, protection dogs for "entertainers", etc.

Unfortunately, my titled, V-rated, breed-surveyed Ursus son is a littermate to the grandsire (Gunther Olympus) of the sire of your pup.

Louise, I ask why do you say unfortunately, your dog is the littermate? Do you not like your dog, or do you not like that the father of mine has a long coat? I have several Shepherds and have had for a good many years. I have a 41/2 month old black female who is out of 2 long coated dogs, and could you believe, She Is SMOOTH COATED!!!!

NOT EVERYONE that buys a German Shepherd plans to compete with them, In fact the majority of pups I sell go to family homes, and I myself am satisfied in providing GREAT FAMILY DOGS. I love my dogs, I enjoy my dogs. The SAR I am getting into is for myself and my dogs. I bought this pup to introduce a new line into what I have already.

The pedigree on these dogs looks pretty nice to me, somewhere in these lines, someone that Has Been Titled, obviously carries the coated gene.Chances are your dog is carrying, does that make him less valuable to you?

Response to Louise --

Schutzhund is a great sport, there are hundreds of phenominal Schutzhund titled dogs in the world.  German Shepherds are capable of excelling at anything --- I happen to be uninterested in Schutzhund.  That does not mean because I do not obtain Schutzhund titles - my dogs are any less than those that do.

I know that many people on here participate in web fighting / mud slinging / putting down other people's dogs etc.  That is not me, I wish everyone the best in whatever they do.

One of the main reasons that I do not do Schutzhund is because my dogs are very active in Animal Assisted Therapy / Pet Therapy --- to be able to help others via this wonderful therapy work, they do not allow you use a dog that is trained in bite-work.  I do not agree with that, I think GSD's are capable of doing both but ..... Pet Therapy was more important to me.  My dogs and I have helped hundreds of people: elderly, mentally challenged, children, infirmed etc.  That is the great thing about German Shepherds: there are so many avenues to pursue with them, the only limits are the ones that we set.

My dogs are trained in advanced obedience, therapy work, tracking, herding --- I love working with them and their versatility.

Please do not judge me or my dogs when you do not know me or my dogs.

As far as Omega Shepherds ----- I can not speak for them or their practices.

Have a great day -- Enjoy your dogs and whatever  you choose to do with them.

Alisia
