Kreiger,

you are correct. The dose for Ivomec is 0.1 ml for every 10 lbs of dog., given orally once a month.  This covers not only heartworm but also multiple other parasites. It can also be given every week in this dosage to treat ear mites (again, it is given orally).  Cattle Ivomec is available without prescription from KV Vet, Jeffers and many other vetsites that cater to horse and cattle owners.

PREVENT, NOT TREAT

If your dog already has heart worms, it's best to take them to the vet for the treatment before you even start them on Ivomec. I had 2 dog's that WERE on heart guard plus and still came down with heart worms. Since then I have changed them all on Ivomec. I will sometimes give them Safe Guard, but I don't mix the 2 together, that's a NO,NO.

Ok bit confused can someone clear it up for me pleas. You guys def caught my attention on the whole Ivomec stuff. I use the interceptor which costs a buttload for well lets just say to many dogs.

I went to Tractor supply today to find what everyone was talking about and found lots of stuff with the IVOMEC brand but nothing called just Ivomec. So will someone please post a few pics of it on here for me or email them to me please. I am all for saving a some money.

Also is this stuff just for preventing heart worms or does it prevent other worms to? Tape, whip, hook, round etc??????

thanks, Nathan  info@HeimatKennels.com

I used Spotton for many years for my dogs, dosage as Birdy stated. Never one flea.  I had a lot of dogs and it is very inexpensive and safe when used as directed.  Now I use Biospot on Blitz, my only dog, never any fleas. For h-worm preventative I buy Horse Health equine ivermectin paste 1.87% from Tractor Supply.  Blitz is a large dog, 97 lbs, I give him 2 clicks of the dispensing wheel monthly, an amount about the size of a pencil eraser.  As a word of warning, this is a horse dewormer and not approved for dogs.  I  put the paste on my finger and rub it on the roof of Blitz's mouth and he swallows it. He's soon 6 and all his h-worm tests have been negative. We are not in a high h-worm area, but we do take him to the beach, Outer Banks and Florida almost every year.  I think ivermectin is contraindicated for collies and shelites.

Nathan, nothing prevents tape worms as this parasite does not pass from dog to dog; it needs an intermediate host, usually the flea or offal. If you dog has/had tapes, there's a very good chance it also has/had fleas and got the tapes from ingesting the flea eggs or from eating a rodent or road kill......yuk!!!

From my understanding the Ivomec prevents all worms BUT tape worms, that is why I sometimes use the Safe Guard, which takes care of everything including tape worms. The Ivomec that I got from Tractor Supply was in a brown box that say's Ivomec, and underneath the name it say's (ivermectin). It say's on the brown box injection, but like other's have stated, you just take a  syringe with a needle on it to get it out of the bottle, and then take the needle off and squirt it in the back of their mouth(or close enough)so they will swallow it. It is used for cattle, and the cost for my area was $34.98. The Safe Guard is even cheaper than that. I have also heard of Ivomec for horses that have an apple flavor, that I would think taste better than the regular. If you would like me to send you a picture or link to tractor supply, just email me privately. I actually asked the people that work there and they directed me to it, and said that everyone they know uses it on their dog's.
