How can you tell FOR SURE that a puppy is beyond the shadow of a doubt longcoat and at what age? Please reply only if you are sure.....

by hodie on 06 January 2008 - 19:01

There is NO certain answer unless the pup has changed coat (normally between 4 and 6 months of age). However, an astute person with experience can see signs early on and certainly by 8-12 weeks suspect a pup may be long coated. There are "degrees" of long coatedness........but clear long coats have certain signs that are easily observed early on.

Beyond any doubt--absolutely?? DNA!

Louise, of course, is correct about the DNA.

Does the DNA test tell  the difference between the true long coat that has no undercoat and a longstock coat that has the undercoat. Of course both are a fault but there is a difference. Just wanted to see if anyone knows if the test can tell. Thanks Laural

No, DNA only tells if a dog is or is not a longcoat, or if it carries or does nto carry the gene recessively. The length, texture, etc is the result of modifers that are not identifyable using DNA. In the big picture, it really doesn't matter as both the longhair and the long stockhair are prohibited by the SV from being eligible for breeding.
