Q Man

by Q Man on 13 January 2008 - 14:01

Well...I too have a pet peeve...and that is here in the US we all expect people to speak the English language...which for the most part we should...but when we go overseas we expect those people to speak English too...I don't see it that way...When I travel overseas I don't expect anyone to speak my language but I certainly do appreciate it when they do and can help me out...I believe if you live here (wherever that is) you should learn the local language...If you travel it's different you should be polite and really appreciate the folks that are willing to help you out...I communicate with a lot of people from different countries and have learned that they all don't know how to speak or write the English language the way it should be done...a lot of mis-spelling and the such...but I do expect the ones that have grown up here and are given the opportunity to go to school for free to make an effort at learning how to do it correctly...I do understand with the invention of "text messaging" and the such it makes it even more difficult but once again I think an effort should be made to learn how to speak and write properly..."text messaging" should be another learned skill that is added to our repertoire of skills...not one that replaces another...I am one too that has always been intrigued with foreign languages and try to pick up a few words here and there...I don't ever pretend to be able to speak these languages but I like to be able to say a few pertinent words so I can ask a few questions or know what someone is talking about...

Bob-O...Where are you from originallly...You have always spoken or written very well and maybe it stems from the fact that you have always been concerned with it...

~Bob~

P.S. Thanks for hearing me out...I don't think I've ever said this stuff before...and I guess it feels good to be able to tell someone how I feel about it...

That is interesting. I spelled 'separate' like 'seperate' all through my school days and no teacher ever corrected it. And, I am one of the ones who hates spelling and grammar mistakes, too! Eeep!

So much that the kids text is beyond me.

Some I know, some I have no clue.  I know the basics and then sometimes I can figure the other stuff out.

I'm quite the fan of WTF and SSDD.

Try to teach an old ADHD, dyslexic to spell.  Its like trying to teach an old dog not to pee on the same tree it has every day for the last 10 years.  I can't touch type either, so when I don't have my glasses on or the light is bad, you guys get the worst of it. For this I offer a blanket apology. LOL

Q-Man, I was born a West-German and remained that nationality until 1981 when I had to make a choice-return to Germany for mandatory service in the Bundeswehr or become a citizen and remain in the U.S.A.. I had spent four (4) years here and liked it a lot, so the decision was easy.

The majority of posters here and the majority of English spelling mistakes are made by native English speakers, meaning American citizens. Sure, we all make typos once in a while, but some here write as if they are almost illiterate. Further, all too many cannot even write a complete sentence. I won't name names, but you all know who they are. This is just the typical lazy American. Too many cannot read either.  One can learn to read,  write and spell, even in adulthood.

So much for the dream of universal public education. It is apparently a failure. Many of the people who post here from foreign countries write better English than do some of the Americans here.

By the way, while I am at it, the word is conFORmation when referring to structure, not conFIRmation. If you do not know the difference, look it up.

Now let the excuses begin......

My pet peeves are also ShepArd and ConfIrmation.

Best error in an advertisement I ever saw published in an ad: "Rockwilder Puppies For Sail"

N.Carolina newspaper, just passing through.

There is an ad in my local paper right now claiming in the top line of the ad : AKC GERMAN Shepard Pups. Private breeder offers top quality. etc. etc.

Makes one go, "mmmmmmmmmmmm" !

As an English teacher, I find this all quite interesting, but must admit, I'm not a great speller.  Nevertheless, I do take the time to check a dictionary if I'm feeling particularly insecure.  So, here's another that makes me crazy:  a lot is two words.  With my juniors in class, I remind them that a lot has a whole in it:  a (whole) lot.  OK, there it is for whatever it's worth.
