GSD female just whelped first puppy, at 2:00 AM, female, weighed 1lb 2 3/8 oz, puppy was breach, and mom did well, but we did not see the sack, the umbilical cord was still attached to mom, she bit it off.   Wanted to know if anyone had that happen to them before, and what the average birth weight should be.  We are presently awaiting remaining litter.  Thank you.

The average bithweight from my females is generally 1-1.5lbs, but we have had puppies from .5-2lbs at birth as well.  It varies by bloodline and litter size.  I have had that happen quite a bit with my girls, the puppy comes out but no sack follows.  The sack SHOULD come out with the next puppy.  Make sure to give your female an oxytocin shot at the end of whelping to make sure she doesn't retain any placentas, as a retained placenta may cause infection.  Most vets will give you Oxytocin to take home, but you may need to take her in.

Thank you olga, I live out in the country. Vets around here are not like city vets. So I can't get oxytocin that easy.  Thank you for replying

A pit (oxytocin) is pretty common.

For future reference you might want to have your vet order some for you in advance.

Actually most country vets should have oxytocin as it is used very commenly in farm animals, good luck with your pups, hope all are doing well!

Dont panic, You can cut the cord yourself,at times pup comes first and the water packet slowly, clean the pup by a cloth Immediately on head and around, hold the pup head down for 5 seconds any water in the nose will drain off put the pup on to Bitch for milk, Make sure the pakce is cozy and the temp in the kennel is warm, else put a lamp above to increase temp in the room, Check tempreature of the pup first Temp will be of the bitch may be 99* centigrade and may reduce, increase heat give warm covering to the pup and the temp  will increase, To help the bitch for easy whelp give milk with  lots of sugar this will give the bitch some energy , Incase the pup is half way out you can still pull the pupy out  by hand carefully  and follow the earlier mentioned steps,Use oxytocin in case of dificulty to whelp else any calcium syrup 10 Ml or mik n sugar will do,
