Hello Everyone,

Was wondering if any of you know what causes eyes to glow. I have a female when she outside at night we can always know where she's at. Our other dogs will show a bluish color or red if we shine a light, by her is always red color at night. Do any of you know why this might be? She has normal dark eyes during the day. My husband says it's the evil coming out of her...

Thank you

Cats and dogs eyes glow at night because of silver “mirrors” in the back of their eyes called the tapetum lucidum (meaning "bright carpet") which is a thick reflective membrane. This collects and re-emits light back to the retina a second time thus giving the light-sensitive cell (rods) a second opportunity to absorb the image information again.

This a adaptation for night vision and makes it easier for them to see at night by maximizing the limited available light. Hence, the reflected light from the tapetum let the animal's eyes appear to glow in the dark. The difference in color of the reflection is due to the structure of the eye. Their eyes reflect red when light reflects off of the blood-rich vessel behind the retina (same thing in photos).
