My friend has a nice dog with a majority of DDR blood. Very nice dog but has an "open coat". It is the only thing I dis-like about the dog. I have seen the aftermath of a good brushing. I think that would be a major pain in the butt. I know he doesn't enjoy it.

Tooling around the web, it looks as though quite a few DDR dogs have it. Is this common in these bloodlines?

It sounds like this person is talking about a Plush or LC with heavy undercoat, I have NEVER heard the expression OPEN COAT either , It would be nice if they would inform us.

I've seen it in standards - but in that context it is a coat without the undercoat I belive.

I googled "open coat" and got "open coat is also referred to as a flat coat.  It is when there is not an abundance of undercoat to fluff up the hair."

The dog is fluffy, like he has the undercoat but not the top. We all know the undercoat is the one that sheds like hell. I think I know what dog GARD is speaking of. I never noticed by looking at the dog or in pics, but it's the texture and way the coat is always clumping and falling out. He's deffinatly not refering to the coat length by saying "open coat", the dogs coat length is perfectly normal. Hopefully GARD will come back and better describe the coat. It's been a long time since I have seen the dog he speaks of.

The term "open coat" is how the dogs owners referred to it so I adopted the term from them.

The dog's coat looks like it is lacking any overcoat what so ever. The whole coat looks like an undercoat. It is soft, thick, and constantly sheds in big clumps. You could brush and brush and brush but it seems to never stop coming out.

I am not talking about a dog with a slight or short overcoat with a heavy undercoat. I am talking the whole coat is an undercoat.

I don't know any other way to explain it.

Interesting.  I guess I've never seen a GSD w/that type of coat.  My DDR female doesn't have what you call an "open coat" and neither has any that I've seen.  She blows her coat twice a year, then hardly sheds at all in between.  I wouldn't say it's a typical DDR trait.
