GARD, could you possibly show us a picture so we too can understand?

I have pictures of the dog, you can't see anything from the pics. I think it is something you may have to feel. You know how a puppy is all soft and fluffy, until he gets his adult coat? Something like that, is how I would describe it.

I have an example of an open coat. I hope you all will understand. I am a dog groomer & know what an open coat is.

This doesn't have anything to do with length. It has to do with under coat. Common breeds that have open coats are the Briard, Bearded Collie, Schnauzers, etc. For small breeds ex. a Maltese has an open coat. there is no under coat. The shed alot less & are extremely quick to dry rather than a typical GSD where they can shed constantly & take for ever to dry.

Poodles are another example of an open coat. If you have the oppertunity to actually feel the different coats of a GSD to one of those breeds try it. You can feel the difference. :)

I usually will not post pics of a dog that is not on this database without the owners permission, but I don't think they will mind if I advertise their websight  :)

The Pic on the left shows what I am talking about the best. Looking at some of his pics, I guess you could say he has a slight overcoat. I wouldn't describe it that way but I am not a conformation judge or groomer, just a knuckle-dragger who likes to train dogs to bite people, so what the hell do I know

It is hard to see in pictures. I see it and know what I am trying to describe but don't know how to articulate it between written word and pic. It would be something to see and feel. What I do know is this is a real nice dog but clumps of hair are continually falling out. When he is throughly brushed the ball of hair is the size of a Texas tumble weed.

This is another dog with what appears to be a very similar coat texture from a picture. There has been a recent litter advertisement from this dog so I feel I have to preface the picture by saying I know nothing of this dog, what he produces, or the owner. This thread in no way shape or form has anything to do with this dog, he is just one DDR dog that looks to have a similar texture of coat.

I can verify that Puck does not have what you call an open coat. I have seen him in person and bred my female to him. His son out of my litter is in the picture off to the right.
