Sunny, i have seen Dallas personally and the first time i saw him outside of the ring was herding sheep. he is titled in "C" course herding and i think they should go to Jersey to see the HGH course :) this dog has really sound temperament... and he is a very very nice Am Bred, he is not extreme AT ALL Jimmy trys to make him look stretch but it just doesnt work.. the dog is very correct, even to say german correct. alot of Am Bred people say not nice things about the dog because they are jealous and because he is "correct' versus not being a hock walking, a$$ dragging, crippled dog like some are used to. i do like some Am Breds, I own one, BUT only when they are clear in the head and sound temperament and have got some guts (just like mine LOL) anyway... Dallas is alot of fun and he is blk and reddish tan and he is not dyed like the idiots say.. he consistently produces blk and red puppies... i have pics of him herding if you wanna see them, email me

Manhattan was the only GSD to go BIS at the Westminster show. To AKC people that is the SuperBowl of dog shows and back then the working dogs and herding dogs were all lumped into one very large group. Just taking that working group was a major win. He was owned by Jane Firestone, a very wealthy heiress who loved and promoted GSD's and some other AKC breeds. I heard she spent well over a million campagning Hatter and that was a very huge sum of money at the time. She owned her own jet and Jimmie and Hatter traveled to shows that way. Tough life!! I saw Hatter a few times, he had soft pasterns and his front could have been better, but he was about the most charming dog ever born, everyone just loved his personality. I think his lovable nature won as many shows for him as did his conformation. Personally, I think shown under the right judges, some of the imports could attain their AKC championships. Some AKC breeders/judges have bred to imports and produced AKC champions. Not all Am line breeders and judges dislike the German dogs.

Dawnmarie, I agree with you 100% about Dallas, he's a super dog and moderate in all ways. Some GSD breeders like him, some don't, no in between with him. He's also producing some very nice progeny. I think some are put off by him just beacuse he's Am lines, but I have a feeling if some would see him and not know his pedigree, they would be impressed, don't you? I couldn't make it to the HGH trial in October, but a friend's parents own 2 GSD's bred and trained by Ulf Kintzel and they both got titles at that trial. I understand qualifying at an HGH trial is not as easy as some might think.

Could you tell me what the OFA rating of Dallas?

by firethorn on 06 December 2004 - 06:12

Sunny, While Dallas won the herding group and over 100 Best in Shows, it was the Girl, Altana's Mystique that beat Manhatten's record. Misty had well over 200 BIS. She was spectaculer. Her pedigree was half Covy-Tucker Hill. Sadly both she and her sister (who took the breed at the German shepherd Dog of America National in 1989(??)never had any puppies. Gorgeous girls. Covy Tucker Hill was extremely successful in the 70's and 80's Especially when they were linebreeding on the Angelique X Harrigan cross. Of course both Angelique and HArrigan were only a generation or two from German imports. It was different then. You could pick those pups out, they were all so alike in type and Black and red. They are not as dominant in the show ring anymore. Susan

elizabeth, Dallas' hips are OFA Good, and Elbows Normal. http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=618306#animal Susan, Wasn't Mystique one of the dogs that was accidently electrocuted in the kennels at a somewhat early age? I'm drawing a blank on the full story. Anyone remember what happened? Cheers, Alexis

Blitzen, HAtter was a great show dog. He had some big time faults and was not a great producer. Dallas is a great producer as well as a great show dog. I agree with you about showing GErman dogs at all-breed shows and under the right judges. However you need to take good ones and it would be good if there were several to show at once. Many all breed judges are not impressed with the GSDs that are shown to them. However if there is only one German dog it will look out of place. Showing several of them helps them look more typical. I've seen plenty that could be successful, but then they are dogs that look like the standard.
