Reason, what do you think of "Piko Bret Bett" (v dark sable dog) from the Jinopo kennels in Czech Republic?

I ask for a good reason... no pun intended here!!

by reason on 21 September 2008 - 20:09

first i get busy on a weekend and yes you are right it is not going to be easy to devise a working aptitude that we can do without a fixed envoiroment/situation

so i am unlikely to include trackinfg at year 1

but i will lokk to introduce at year 2 as i feel it bring a better understanding and relationship between dog and handler

sch trained puppies do tracking befor obedience generally started at 10 weeks old and properly trained it bring self confidence to the dog as this exercise is done by the dog but the manner controlled by the handler

For the record i have tracked many time is sch comps i track min 3 x per week and 5 times leading to a trial, i have watched hndreds of dogs at world championship level to club level and only seen 2 track on a harnes, i do not own an harnes mine track because the word track means search the floor and i will find a scent

P R crap issued by KC to con the general public that they have an interest, but will still continue to register puppies from all breeds that do not conform to any breed standard a joke

Reason, how long are the tracks and how old, (roughly) how many legs please?  What do you use?

Have you heard of Jinopo?  It sounds like a sort of co-op rather than a specific kennel.  Sorry if you're tired, I can wait for my replies.

Hi Beepy, I hadn't seen it before but it's just more KC lip service... and you get to pay £32:50 for the privilage!  I think the "certificate of attendance" is beautifully condescending... how useful would that be in your life?  They never miss an oppo' to make a few quid, even when it's our dogs' health at stake!

Not sure what you want me to comment on for Piko

From the photo he looks to me to be a good looking working type strong male (am sure he is full of breed faults foreleg lenght etc which i left behind a few years ago)

His breeding is mixed with Uran and the Arminius kennel in the female line, i dont know much about the Czech breeding even though my current dog has a small dose of it)

A good dog is were you find it is in in the UK if so who has him and does he work

SCH1/TR1 track 300 paces 2 x 90 degree corners two articles one middle of first or second leg one at end 20 mins old handler laid

Judged for intesity accuracy drve etc

Reason, I think this dog is pretty stunning actually, his upper arm may be slightly short & steep but that's not the end of the world.

If you "google" Jinopo, you can see some video of him and others; whilst they are all working dogs, a few of them are very nice indeed... Mambo is another that I liked.  The Czech Republic is not so far and it's got me thinking... a bad sign for a woman of my years!

Thanks for the info re: tracking.  It's not looking good for me getting to South Valley.  A friend who's showing at Belfast (GSD) this coming weekend had me promise to dog sit if the arranged dog sitter let her down... and yes it looks like that's what's happening!  I don't care, there has to be another in the not too distant future and I've now made my friend promise to come with me to that... it might get her interested in training her bitch!

http://www.learningaboutdogs.com/html/k9_multi_sports.html

I run tracking courses for complete beginners at Learning About Dogs.  I teach the same way whether or not handlers want to compete or not.  Kay Laurence has a programme called k9 multisports which was designed so that ALL dogs can participate ie any breed, size, or handicap.  Apart from the core exercises there are others.

I have yet to find a dog that cannot after a couple of sessions training not complete a track consisting of two 50 yard legs with an article at the end.

We are not talking about style, but ability.  A top working triallist will have a good tracking dog, it may not, however conform to the Schutzhund picture, that is irrelevant. it can follow a 3 hour track with up to 30 legs and find 3 teeny articles the size of a postage stamp.

There is no need to buy a harness to begin with and even if you did, webbing ones from Pets at Home cost less than a good quality show lead. As for lines, cheap as chips from B & Q etc, it does not have to be a particular material.

I track my GSD on both a harness (for WOrking Trials) and a collar (for Schutzhund) he appears to cope.........

Hi Langhaar,  I'm so surprised I didn't know anyone tracked on anything but a harness till Jess told me the other day on here!

Why do you only use your harness for WT?

Your point about a dogs ability to track is spot on, however, it's not just the dogs we have to consider!

I think Reason has pretty much got the measure now... he may not be thrilled with it... but I think he understands... slowly does it!  It's a start.

In Working Trials you the equipment is prescriptive, tracking must be conducted using a harness with the line coming from the top of the harness ie on the back of the dog.

I do think that using a collar with the line coming from underneath the dog does encourage a deeper nose.
