Personal fact-I'm a New-bee to the sport of Schutzhund (my freshman year, if you would) & I'd very much enjoy seeing the major players from around the world competing out on the same field, but is it worth it?   More importantly, if I do decide to go how could I make my spectating experience a more valuable learning experience?   Bottom line- What would be the benefit(s) of going and seeing the event live and in person versus buying the DVD, popping some pop corn and watching it from my couch?   Thanks

Your question is like "should I buy a DVD of the Mahler 2nd symphony to be performed tonight at Lincoln Center, or should I buy a ticket and go?"

No offense meant, but if you don't already know the answer to this, perhaps staying home, buying a DVD and popping corn is a good idea. It sure would be a lot cheaper.

What you get by seeing these teams is intangible in large measure, but, for instance, you might be able to ask questions of others watching to enhance what you might be seeing and hopefully learning. You might see subtle and not so subtle things from the handlers and dogs, and from different vantage points which you would not probably have on a DVD. There is no substitute for being present at any event unless you simply don't want to be there, hate crowds, are disabled, or are claustrophobic. You might even meet some nice people. There are some in this sport. This event comes perhaps once in a lifetime for many. If you can go, leave your dog at home, take your camera, take a notebook and go watch. I bet you won't be sorry.

dAWg,

I gotta agree, you can't get wet without cracking a few egg's...LOL    or something like that..:)

As for your learning experience,  take the camcorder.

Go dAWg.

I echo hodie. I, and everybody else in the sport, learned LOADS from watching trials ands LISTENING to the comments of the more experienced folks standing next to you, behind you, etc. Every single trainer/handler in the sport has, at some time or another, given running commentaries for the newbie beside them in the stands. Sometimes, it turns out to be a top competitor giving you the commentary. :-) It is absolutely worth attending, as it is only the second time the event has not been held in Europe. That is why evryone and their cousin is planning to attend. Go, the $1500-2500 you spend will be money well-spent in your schutzhund "education." Be sure to introduce yourself!!

You may never get another chance to see some of these GREAT trainers again...and to be in the United States for only the 2nd time is amazing...I went to the WUSV in Boston ('98)...which was the first time in the USA...and it was amazing...since then I've been to the FCI Championship and the BSP in Germany and have never...ever...regretted it for one moment...

If you don't travel to Europe this is your only chance to see these Europeans show their dogs on US soil...It's a once in a life time experience...and...It's right here in the United States...It just doesn't get any better then that...!

If you just want to watch some nice dogs work, you can do that on YouTube. But the experience of an event like this is what makes it.  The stuff that is not caught on camera... the comments made by the experienced person sitting next to you, the questions you can ask that person, watching the warm-ups, seeing how an event like this is actually put on, not only watching the dogs that do well but also those that don't -- and learning from that!!

I'm sure you could still learn a ton from the DVD's, but it's just not the same as the actual thing.
