very true. As a K-9 handler and owner, a person has be ever alert for this very reason. If the K-9 had bitten anyone, he would been held liable. I'm just glad that everything turned out for the best.

I don't know how laws re: police K-9s are over there, but in Connecticut if anyone is hurt or property is damaged by a police K-9, the police and the city cannot be held liable, even if it involved a non-criminal situation. Fairly recently someone got mauled by a local police dog and the man was unsuccessful in bringing about a lawsuit even though he was not breaking any laws or being pursued by the police. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't know whether one could go after the handler as an individual. I have heard no other stories since the initial one. (And this particular K-9 was later involved in an incident when he attacked a rookie cop unfamiliar to him and this cop shot and killed him with his shot gun.) Who knows?
