Well said Jim

You are correct it is the KC who allow this to happen, as I have said before if the KC would make health etc, compulsory before breeding -  this program would have had no credibility.

The KC was asked on the show would these unscrupulous breeders be banned -- answer NO, They said they would rather them be within the KC  as to ban them they would not necessarily stop them breeding, but they still accept their registrations, - what are the public to think!!

We all know every breeder is not the same, but it is the KC not the BBC who have it in their hands to change the system

And still after all this controvesy they are still dragging their feet!!

the K.C. have screwed up big time.

I posted on here a few weeks ago that they registered the offspring of a Brother/Sister mating of 2 White Shepherds.

As for Crufts,I hadn't watched it in years due to their biase against the GSD,decided to watch it when I heard Zamp was entered.

Nothing's changed, still the same breeds winning year in year out and Zamp got totally shafted.

Bancroft, we should be united not divided, because there's no reason why a well bred, well constructed GSD shouldn't work... they don't have to be terrier fronted & square with little hind angulation.  If some people select showing over working... it should be ok, it's personal choice and until you've tried working a "show dog" you really shouldn't always be at the front of the line to slate them; the show lot don't slate you this way!

Good breeders are not in the minority and the KC are heeding the public and ignoring the breeders and the health and welfare of our dogs!  The genuine concern you mention, is largely ignorance, the public still think that normal coated dogs are Alsatians and long coated ones are German Shepherds... thanks, in part, to the KC.  If the KC will back our BC & action the proposals, we'll be on our way to real improvement, but the proposals have had to be watered down to accommodate the greed of the KC... pity the BBC didn't ask a few good breeders about that can of worms!

We need a KC that works FOR our dogs in every way, not one that lets us down, time after time... greed and lethargy, that's our KC!

Bancroft, you make much of "working ability" but what direct experience do you have of working "show bred" dogs?  Your comments below if not divisive are... what actually?

All our present health checks are voluntary... "we" are trying to make them compulsary!   Please do some research before writing posts like the one below.

I hope this marks the demise for dog breeding for looks, chasing ribbons and pure conformation and we can get back to the serious business of taking into to account the dog's temperament and functional worth. .........and in the GSD's case = working ability

Bancroft

I have never had any interest in the Showline G.S Dog. and for that matter any Show dog, but i still appreciate the work that goes into the conditioning of such Dogs

As for what people consider okay regards the Conformation of such Dogs that is another question

It all comes down to the Hips and elbows etc in the end, Is the critira needed to have a top showline dog, is the breed being ruined because of these needed qualities that makes up a Champion show dog

May i ask you a straight question It seems you are like me into the Working G.S dog,

But what are the hip and elbow scores on your own dogs it will be interesting to know

I'd like to see the KC ensure that all dogs have several generations of health screening before registration but seeing as health screening and passing a set level isnt required I cant see things moving on.

All the KC are doing is trying to show that they are "improving" things but until they get a spine and stop registering pups from unscreened stock things arent going to change.

Maybe we should invite the KC to see the work that IS being done in the breed and highlight the lack of imput from the KC - show the KC in bad light and breeders in good light?

As for the Show/working debate - all dogs should be able to do all - there should not be a working or show or couch potato side to our breed.  I do accept that some dogs prefer certain aspects in much the same way that people do, but whether I get out the padded sleeve or show collar my boy goes bouncing to the door :-) eager to what I ask, mind you he is a bit of a show off!  And forgets he's 12 and really too old for either, despite still remembering all his stuff!

We should be united in the aim to improve the lot of our chosen breed.  It really does not matter where ones preference lies re: show / work... or what kind of work.

The KC won't stop registering puppies whose parents haven't met the required criteria (there's too much money involved) they may agree to the 2 tier registration system.  I guess it would then be up to us to educate the public as to what it all meant.  It would be a reasonable start and the more of us there are in agreement, the more pressure we can put on the KC.
