Liebe

We have one dog in our Club who is mostly a Showline G.S i think three quarters

But this Dog is now training for his ScHh 2, He is very good on obedinance, i have not seen him track but i guess he is okay,

His Protection is keen, not a great bite but he does the job well enough without being spectacular, but then how many are working line or not

So he does the job well and in Feb of 2009 i fully expect him to get his ScHh2

He is a very nice Dog and his owner thinks he is great, and so he is

Then bloody well support "us" and the BC et al re the KC.  NOT the BBC for theirs was a bias and limited programme... at best!

by Gustav on 14 December 2008 - 16:12

The problem is the delineation of "working show dogs" and showy working dogs". There should be neither!!1 There should be a German Shepherd with good conformation and good temperament that supports the dog's ability to work...period! I agree with both Bancroft and Missbeeb on medical health and mental health. BUT.....if you are going to insist on testing for medical health than you must insist on testing for mental health. PERIOD! Until this approach is championed you're lying to yourself, be you medical health advocate or mental health advocate. Less you end up like the American show shepherd that the public KNOWS has both medical and mental issues and has led to the decline in show numbers and people wanting to have them as even pets.

Gustav, the BC have included (albeit not perfect) a working / temperament test in their proposal.

It's little acorns but we have to start somewhere and the biggest problem is getting the KC to implement ANYTHING that might reduce their income!  I wish the BBC had made headlines of THAT piece of information.

OT Do you know the guy from the vom Patriot kennel?

on reading these posts it is clear that we are all singing from the same hymn sheet but alas not the same words we ourselves need to be together in what we want from the KC and as missbeeb says we need to start somewhere and i think we should all be telling the KC that we want a two tier system which includes mandatory health screening and mental tests and we want them the KC to enlighten the public what they will get with a two teir system they can take the class one puppy with all the above or a class two puppy with none of the above and if we are honest the public well around 90% of them will want the puppy that has the parentage tested and proved and if the KC wont move on this then it is time to break away from them and get the BC to start our registrations etc

Spot on, Jim.  We DO need to stick together, write to our MPs... whatever it takes, because we may never get a better oppo' for this.

Then people should support the BC's proposal....our working dog club has three show Dobe breeders active. When they first started training with us they were very opininated about working and very leery. Because all their dogs were Champions, but since the Dobe breed club has imposed a WAC test before a dog can get his/her ROM then they realised they had to do something. Its two years later and boy have we seen some attitudes change and also dogs improve. Two of the three breeders have gotten their ROM, though these dobe's still need an infusion of new blood.(smile). This fall I did the decoy work for 27 dobies for their WAC certification under Ray Carlyle. Bottom line is the Dobie people have taken an enormous step IMO, by mandating this. Since the test does not actually have the dog bite anything, the AKC could not stop the breed club from implementing the test. But the test does measure sound sensitivity, nerves through open umbrellas and walking on different surfaces, having the dog approach strange people shaking rocks in a can, and lastly having somebody(ME), charge the dog to about five feet away and scream, wave my stick wildly and try to intimidate the dog into running away. Though I have sleeve on for my protection, no contact is made . 15 dogs out of 27 passed....last year 5 out of 22 passed. All of the dogs that trained with us passed except one Champion and afterward the breeder said she would not breed her again...BRAVO!!   All in all its a start for the Dobie people in American show ring but like you indicated acorns at least show an awareness of need.

Jaymesie51, missbeeb, you are so correct, and what you both have in your postings, especially Missbeeb, is a passion and strong belief. Missbeeb you remind me a bit of myself 20 years ago. That is what is needed now, all together forward as one,a force to be reckoned with. liz
