I'm currently feeding EVO (large bites).  Thinking of making a switch in hopes a new food may help my female with her itchy skin and recurring hot spots.  Her skin is so dry and flaky.  I realize it's winter and their skin can get drier during the winter months.  She also has inhalent allergies.  I've never been a huge fan of the 42% protein in the EVO and it appears that the Orijen has the same amount.

Both of my dogs are on EVO and for the most part (aside from my female's itchy & dry skin) - they do well on it.  Just wondering it I wouldn't be better off just leaving well enough alone?!?!

At this point I'm leaning a little more towards TOTW if I do make a switch.  Just wanted to get some thoughts on the products from those who feed it.

I have fed Evo small bites for awhile now [years] all my dogs do great on it, no issues whatsever. I have heard of Orijen the price is horrible from the websites I've seen.  We order so much Evo that we are now distributors though we don't even sell it just get it for ourselves, our cost for the big bag is $33 a bag, I like the price and the quality so not planning on switching at this point.  I also use some Evangers canned, either hunk of beef or chicken drummets boy the dogs LOVE it.

Good luck in your decision!

I have a dog with food allergies who does not do well on raw. He does very well on TOTW buffalo & Venison, and the salmon. I tried the Wetlands TOTW, and that didn't work well for him at all. I think he does better on the TOTW fish.

His coat is in excellent condition now. Barely itches, and he actually was able to put on better muscle than he did with raw. For him it works well.

I have a young male who eats TOTW bison and venison, but he doesn't have allergies. He also gets raw bison and beef. When he was a little puppy, he had dry flaky skin so I added more fat to his diet and that worked like a charm. With the dry flaky winter skin, sometimes a little more fat is what they need. TOTW is fairly low in fat, so I supplement with oils (I tbsp per meal) or meat fat. My boy has excellent muscle and little body fat, but he works every day too.

Search the Messageboard for "Taste of the Wild" and other brands you are inquiring about,  and it should bring past discussions regarding the food(s) you are researching.. ..  Good Luck -

Taste of the Wild is what my female Husky eats. She has the softest fur I have ever felt on any dog.....ever......in fact she is the healthiest she has ever been being on that food. I do the kind with Salmon in it....smells horrible, but she likes it. That may be what I feed the future GSD pup I get also. It's fairly reasonable in price. I think $42? for a 30lb bag at the local tractor supply here.

Never ever owned a dog with skin allergies in about 60 years of keeping them

Why do you guys think this is that we here on this forum so many dogs with a skin problem, i have my ideas about it but they will not go down too well on this forum with most of you.

so to save any unpleasant replies seeing its the start of a new yeari will keep it to myself

But your thoughts will be interesting

My one gal gets Orijen 6 fish - I *think* this one is a little lower on the protein side, but I can't recall exactly and I'm feeling too lazy to go check the bag :) Her coat and skin is amazing now, although I am thinking of going back to raw with her soon, although since she is doing so well on it, I may switch back to this same kibble if the raw doesn't pan out again.

I would highly recommend either Orijen Fish (1st choice) or TOTW fish (both quite similar) for a dog with skin condition. I know many folks who use either of these for their dogs who have skin conditions and have had great results.

Price wise, Orijen can be pricier, but I think it also depends on where you are. TOTW and Orijen cost close to the same where I'm at, likely due to shipping costs? If I recall correctly when I was checking the labels for both, I think you also have to feed less with Orijen than TOTW, but maybe someone here can correct me if I'm wrong.

We feed RAW and also kibble and have used all three..EVO, Orijen and TOTW.

Currently using TOTW, as they have done equally well on all three and TOTW is significantly better priced here.

Good Luck! I think it is just a matter of finding whatever the dog does best on.

You could also try some salmon oil for the skin...not sure how much it will help but worth a shot I think
