There is most likely to be a bit of a scene at Crufts to say the least from what we are reading, and the Bulldog folk have decided to meet it head on and be prepared for any repeat of last year and the BBC. They are apparently appointing a press officer to deal with any questioning, or interviews from anyone that approaches.

Sad that this is to happen, but it would seem like a good idea.  what do others think about appointing some-one in our breed that can speak frankly, truthfully and lucidly - without the bull and without getting nervous enough to say the wrong thing and be misconstrued. Its a tall order, I know.

Better to be safe than be caught with our knickers down (figure of speech only, so dont get excited)

Please see below, my second reply from the BBC.  What do you all think...?

Thanks for your follow-up email about Pedigree Dogs Exposed. Please accept my most sincere apologies for the long delay in replying, this is most unfortunate and regrettable.

Your concerns were passed to the producer who responded as follows:

We conducted many interviews for the film - both on screen and off-screen - and we spoke to dozens of dog breeders and many representatives of breed clubs / societies and breed councils.

As part of the research process we did indeed talk to Malcolm Willis as well as several other geneticists, including the KC's Jeff Sampson, canine geneticist David Sargan (Cambridge University) and Professor David Balding at Imperial College who last year conducted a key report into the population structure of pedigree dogs.

Professor Steve Jones is one of the world's foremost geneticists and his work is by no means confined to studying man. He is well-versed on the breeding of dogs. Additionally, as Professor Jones often points out: "The beauty of genetics is that it is the grammar of biology - its rules apply equally to almost every living thing, from plants to elephants." Indeed, the principles of genetics were first discovered by Gregor Mendel, who did his work on peas. Professor Jones is also a skilled communicator - an important consideration for television.

The RSPCA was just one of many expert groups interviewed in the film and their position as the largest animal welfare charity in the world, with a special interest in the issues explored in Pedigree Dogs Exposed, fully justified their inclusion in the film.

Finally, the film clearly supported mandatory health tests - and, indeed, took the Kennel Club to task for not making health testing a condition of registration. As such, the film-makers fully support the GSD Breed Council's campaign.

I hope this helps allay your concerns, but please be aware that if you wish to pursue this complaint further, you can contact the BBC's Editorial Complaints Unit who will independently investigate your complaint. You can write to them at the following address:

Whether or not you choose to pursue your complaint with the ECU please be assured we have taken on board your concerns about this programme.

Yours sincerely

I think it would be a good idea to appoint someone to do this, liz

Sorry... didn't mean to hi-jack your thread, Mo.

The ideal person, imo would have been Malcolm Willis, but I understand that's not possible... who would we plump for?

Missbeeb, don't know what to make of your BBC reply, interesting to see the programme makers fully support the Breed Council's campaign. I am not so sure about Gregor Mendel's work with PEAS. lol. I suppose it is a much better reply than the first one we all got!!!! I know who i would give the job as press officer, not sure how popular it would be though!!! liz

The proposal for a post of PRESS OFFICER for our breed is a very good proposal. It should be an official post, elected/selected by the GSD Breed Council, and recognised by the Kennel Club. Permission and recognition will be required from the Kennel Club for such a person to operate both officially and effectively.

David, please correct me if i'm wrong, but is'nt it the general concensus of opinion that the Breed Coucil could not organise a p..s up in a brewery, or at least thats the impression i, and i'm sure others have got from reading other posts, besides, to ask them now, you would probably get permission for Crufts 2010.

Regards as always.

My choices???

David   -  Sue Belfield   -  Paul Rattigan  -  Bill Owen   -  Julie Bridge (but I know she will hit me !)   Sheila Rankin.

There are lots of others, but lets see what others think !   Lets get a name to a job, and get it processed and given the tick by the K.C. - via the Breed Council of course,   We`ll have to be quick.    Mo - Mascani
