Are there any people food, such as spices and herbs, that are extremely poisonous to dogs.

What about ginger, cinnimon, hot pepper, etc?

Does a dog owner ever have to worry about minute amounts of spices and herbs left on a cutting board or a mixing bowl?

Dogs can tolerate a very small amount of chocolate, for example.

Thanks

I'm also interested in the answers to this question as I usually let the dogs lick the bowls before I wash them.

Any "expert" advice out there?!

Dogs can tolerate quite a bit of chocolate, as I once found out after the gal in my sig scarfed down a whole box of VERY expensive Roger's Victorian Creams, with no ill effects at all!    Of course, there isn't a lot of chocolate in something like that. They are only chocolate coated.

It's the pure dark chocolate bars, baker's chocolate, and pure cocoa you need to worry about.

Raisins and grapes are extremely toxic to some dogs. Then, again, my mom's Springer ate a whole bowl of grapes, and the only ill effect was he REALLY REALLY had to pee when she got home...  Other dogs may become seriously ill or die with as little as 3 or 4 raisins.

Onions are poisonous too, but I wouldn't be worried about a small amount, used as seasoning in food. I did hear about a lady eventually killing her cat by putting powdered onion soup mix on its food, but she'd been doing this for a long time before the cat died.

As for pepper, what dog in its right mind is going to eat hot pepper?? I used to paint a mix of pepper and water on the window ledge to keep my dog from chewing it. It worked very well as a deterrent!

Letting dogs lick dishes? Hmmm...my dogs have been know to eat poop. However, I wash my dishes in a dishwasher, with extremely hot water, so I'm not too worried about germs. (Though I very rarely let them lick dishes. This usually only happens when I've left a dish where they can get to it.) If you hand wash your dishes, though, I wouldn't let the dogs do this, especially if I fed raw. Most raw chicken these days is infected with salmonella, camplyobacter, and other nasty bugs that can make humans extremely sick.

Artificial sweeteners should not be given to dogs either

Yes, xylitol is EXTREMELY poisonous to dogs!

Not sure about Nutra-sweet, though.
