Lets hear everyones opinion on the finish to the heel positioin.  Do you teach the flip finish or to go arounhd behind.  Please tell me you preferance and pros and cons between the two.

Thanks

depends on the drive of the dog

if the dog is sharp a flip finish is great, but if the dog is a bit slower, then the go around is much better. Its the total "picture" that counts.

I have always had the dog go around me, but lately I have been trying the flip finish, cause it gets the dogs attention,
and keeps the dog close to you, also, try a lot of left turn moves, that gets the dog to move close without knowing and then
it becomes second nature

I teach both so the dog does not learn to anticipate and sit to one side while coming to 'front'.  Can be useful in real life as well...just gives me more options.

go around.   to much room for error with the dog being crooked on the flip.

I like the go-around better, but I'm not against the flip at all

I think it of course comes down to personal preference, I find the flip to be more impressive if taught correctly, ive always thought it looks very neat, but as with anything its the quality of training, so a flip can look poor just as much as a go around finish can if not trained properly. I also think getting the dog straight in a flip finish is easier than the go around, with their backside flicking out etc. But its personal preference..do what your most comfortable with...

Great Topic!!!!

something I have observed regarding flips or rounds-  not only the drive/intesity of the dogs work but also the physical build of the dog.  While a longer backed dog may look cumbersome doing a flip it could look graceful and smooth going around & a shorter backed dog can look flashy popping quickly in to basic position while the around the back is just  extra foot work.

I also teach both..   and then decide which to use in competition..    whichever she does faster and straighter i use..

The only time I use a right finish is on a broad jump excercise, so my dog does not bump the board, I will sometimes use it in the utility ring to show my dog's versatility. Otherwise I always use a left finish, I can see where the dog is looking and they stay closer to me. I see no difference in my dogs completing more straight in one direction, if you train them properly they should both be correct anyway.

A longer dog can still look very clean doing a flip finish if they are taught to back into it.
