Julie,I have a very dominant female that does not accept any male,so we have to hold her even when she has the best time. On the other hand, she is an excellent mother.

Cage- maybe a bit of a language barrier going on here. Holding a bitch for breeding is one thing, advising a wide range of people coming here looking for advise ( many with No experience) to FORCE a bitch is another.  I have several females who are dominant getting bred and will turn on the male. Sometimes a muzzle will be required, most often a firm hold of the collar and scruff is enough. I think the O.P was having concerms why the bitch would not accept the male which most likely was a result of the bitch not being ready / estrous for breeding. Forcing the breeding would not have been advise I would give. Making sure the bitch was actually ready to breed would have been the best route.

ok i have experience with this.
my female will not breed to a stud on her own land, she is dominate  over him and will only breed to dominate males,
this is exactly what would happen in the wild.
and yes she is standing.
she only stands for 5 days.
anywhere from 9-16 days.
each cycle is different.
doing a progesterone test is a good idea, if you dont know your female and her cycle.
i too would not put her with a stud till she is ready.
if she does not move that tail to the side she is not ready.
you also should maybe go to an experience stud , that would know when she is ready.

and if all this does not work you can just do an AI.

she just may be so dominate she wont breed too.

if you can find a breeder that know what to look for that is a good idea too.

hope this helps

1.  Is the male experienced is another issue to check.  A young or immature male can easily be intimidated by a Dominate bitch.  I had one who tried to inpregnate the bitches ear his first time he got so excited.

2.  Check where she is in her heat  cycle before itroducing her to the male.

3.  Check that there's no physical barrier to breeding... some bitches have an odd vaginal opening either with a sticture as is mentioned, or that it isn't normally shaped.

4.  The male and bitch should be supervised durring attempts to breed... Introduced each seperat time an attempt is made rather than just toss them into a kennel together and hope for the breeding.  I've had bitches who had to be held for a stud to mount her, including one who would basically just go limp and lay on the ground unless held.

5.  All else fails there's always AI.

I'd want to know if the Stud was just not interested in her, if she was aggressive, if he tried but failed etc also.

Thanks so much for all the comments.  I do think the female was taken way too early to the stud, and maybe taken away
too soon.  The stud is an experienced male and I actually used him once before.  The stud owner is  very experienced with breeding GSDs, so I wonder what happened......

Tell your friend to take her to vet who is specialized in breeding .He or she can start the correct way ,Also make sure female has been around other males dog also so she does not freak out when  times come to breed and sees male intention,( if she has not socialized or only dog she has )

Julie,I´not speaking about forcing the female to be bred if it is not the correct time for breeding.
