Hey Jenni,
I do know what you mean, but I AM talking about people that have no previous GSD experience, would you adopt one of your breeder pups to someone like you if you had never owned a GDD before, with your criteria you just mentioned???

Jenni, I do very well adopting my dogs out, my dogs go fairly fast compared to most rescues, they do not stay months on end unless they are seniors.
I do make exceptions, I talk to the people....I try to weed them out. Yes I get some angry people, occasionally, not very often though, maybe once a year. Most of them understand about my requirements.

A working dog owner is different than a family wanting a family companion or a "guard dog" that is why there are exceptions...

There are some difficult rescues out there, for instance, I tried to adopt a Brittany Spaniel from the Brit rescue to use as a pheasant hunting dog. They wouldn't adopt to me because I was using it for hunting. Duh, isn't that what they are bred for??? So I went to a breeder instead....so there are rescues that make NO exceptions out there. It is basically to protect the dogs and I do understand that.

The woman wanting to adopt is named Cynthia. My name is Yvonne. We are simply looking for a pet gsd for her and she is an active home and excellent owner. She does not wish to support bad breeders by paying them for a puppy off craigslist or area byb what is the problem? She is trying to do right why is there so much issue with this? She maintains her horses properly and her dogs. She has the ferrier out and gets medical care for her dogs. She does not throw them in some back yard ignored and untrained or unworked. She is a animal person and good dog owner.

I can't get over one min she must not be a good owner because she lives on a farm they must just be tossed out in an unfenced yard and be unsupervised thinking they can gaurd the farm then when I say she has fence and they sleep inside it is she might not be a good gsd owner because the dog may not get out and work enough. No wonder people resort to buying from breeders that don't give a damn I am thinking. I do not breed my german shepherds or I would feel confident enough of this woman to let her have one of my pups.

 Newbie,
Nobody is bashing her or you, we just need more information to adopt to people.
I have asked that you fill out an application or rather, have her fill one out to better assess her needs and to see what dog would be best for her and if she would be approved, your say-so means nothing to anyone else, since we don't know you either. I want to see for myself. The farm animal thing just raises a red flag is all...
The application serves as  information to see what her lifestyle is, to see what dog may fit her lifestyle and daily happenings, etc!!!! I get alot of information from an application. I also do the checks and talk to the people directly too.
Just because you say so, doesn't mean much, sorry to say....
I like to find a dog to match the peoples lifestyle, not every dog is meant for every owner. There are many different lifestyle dogs. I have one here that is very dog aggressive, would you want me to adopt that dog to her knowing that she needs to train it more not to eat her dog???
There are reasons for applications...so please bear with us, we are just trying to help you and her out....

I really don't understand what this "farm animal" issue is or why it raises a red flag.

I think you rescue people are doing a lot of good but I think you are overprotective of these rescue dogs. The GSD was a multi purpose dog and lived and worked on farms for a lot of years. Yeah Im aware of changes in our soceity and there arent many sheep to herd around anymore. Still there are many people in rural areas who would provide an excellent home for some of these dogs and I would venture to say that the majority would not have a fenced yard. Just because a lot of rural people with a farm and ranch background have not owned a GSD before does not mean they dont have any experience with working bred dogs or how to manage them and many potentially fantastic homes are turned off by the hoops they have to jump through that are often rediculous to anyone with a little common sense.

 Well Sporty,
Here in Montana, German Shepherds look alot like wolves and right now with everyone shooting wolves on site and SSS....you may get my drift. Yes we are overly protective of these dogs, they have been through alot already. There are more than just sheep around here, we have cows, horses and more.
German Shepherds get bored!!! They will start chasing livestock just for fun. Around here all they have to do is be in a pasture with livestock and they get shot. People don't stop to inquire if they are chasing or not.
Also they get run over with people driving into the yard. UPS drivers are famous for this, as they tear into a place because they are always late.
One of my people had a very large acreage electronically fenced, the dog went down to meet the UPS driver, and slid under his tires. The driver knew they had dogs there, 4 of them all GSD's.  He never saw the dog, it was DEAD thankfully immediately....after that, the people chose to have the packages delivered in a box at their gate. It could have been prevented, it was an especially nice black GSD and we were all just sick. Another ranch family adopted a GSD from me in eastern MT. They said they knew how to train, had one for years, lived with their stock, etc...well after 6 months, while he was out feeding the cows with the dog, the dog decided to take down a calf and kill it. Thank God he didn't shoot the dog, but instead returned the dog to me....so, I have decided to avoid this in the future...you can't protect them all, but we can try. We don't save them to throw them into another bad situation. I am not saying that everyone is this way... that is why we screen so heavily!!!!
Steph
