OGBS

Well then, now you are starting to make a little sense. See, if you spend the time to write in a way that people can understand the point you are trying to get across it helps greatly!
I have no problem adopting dogs to people in rural areas and have done so many times.
Like I said before, go work with rescues that are willing to work with you. It really is pretty simple.

Are some of you guys off your medication???!!! I haven't laughed so much in ages........ How can people take the written word so literally.............? What is wrong with someone using a third party to guide them if they are not so experienced in a particular breed? We all have to start somewhere. I didnt have to go through a police style interrogation and give DNA to get my first pup, and whilst I'm not saying I shouldn't have been vetted a little more (I agree with sensible vetting, but even then it has it's limits), for God's sake get a life you lot. It's a simple enquiry. The debate re rescue etc should be taken elsewhere.......

Thank you sugarplum for being well able to put into words exactly how I feel this thread has gone so well.

OGBS,

People that live in Chicago should not throw stones...ever.

I live in the country.  So do my neighbors that are RNs, a PA, a RT, and one that works in the insurance industry (moved here after getting a divorce from a surgeon).  How many people does your city produce that have to be kept in cages?

I am soooo confused by this thread.  I hope the lady finds a dog.

Are people here actually mad because someone had the nerve to say SOME (not all) rescue organizations aren't perfect and maybe there are some options they should consider to free up some space, maybe some of their rules are a little too stringent?  Really??????  I MUST be missing something, it surely couldn't be that.

I know of many rescues in my area that are full, but thei high standards set by their (sometimes arbitrary and stupid)  unbreakable rules are not easily attained by many.  Unfortunately this means that some really good potential homes are summarily passed up, as well as some pretty good homes are summarily passed up....but that's OK, right?  Because those dogs are so much better off in those kennels, right?  Of course in the meantime there is no more room at the inn either.  What was the moral of Aesop's tale about the dog in the manger?

Here is the really funny thing:  My coach and I were discussing this not long ago, as a matter of fact.  Any rescue dog would be very lucky to be placed into his hands because either the dog would have a great life with him or it would be rehabilitated/trained  from whatever neurosis it had and placed in a great home.  But you know what?  We will never know because he would be passed over without a second look because he doesn't have a "fenced yard", and THAT is the shame of the fixed mindset.

Yes, I know some of the good people on this thread, so I must be missing something.

Gasp I am a terrible dog owner I do not have a fence and have not had a fenced yard in the last ten years and have owned dogs properly and without mishap all that time to lol yeah someone went to a breeder and told them I would be an aweful home to sell a pup I was looking at because it would get killed within six months cause I did not have a fence... even though my female gsd at the time had lived there 6 years without being left running loose to get hit in that road at that house when she went to did this and knew about my female being just fine.

People kill me with stuff like that. Let's hug the people who do stupid stuff because they lost their dogs and condemn the people who have not because they dont agree with their methods.

Sue,
Have him give me a call.
I look at every situation individually.
A fence isn't a requirement for me.
I was involved here with a very high profile rescue case heavily covered by the local media (and a little by CNN, MSNBC, and Fox) in the spring of 2010.
As a result of this particular dog another was adopted and went in to a great home, and gasp, no fence.
Like I said and will keep saying, work with a group that will work with you.

I have a great female living with me. Probably a GSD or Dutchie mixed with Pit. Highly trainable, unbelieveable willingness to please. She would make a great demonstration dog for an obedience trainer or a little rocket ship in agility.
PM me if he is sincerely as interested as you say.

Dogbone,
I agree, but, I don't live in Chicago either.
I have in the past though, but, I own a house in the northern suburbs.
I love being out in the country also.
Chicago does have some great bars and summer festivals.
In my opinion, you can't beat Lake Michigan for sailboat racing either!
I also agree that people need to stop human breeding. In the cities and rural areas.
Thanks for your wonderful contribution to this thread!

We need more like you in my area, OGBS.  I wish I knew you did rescue in early 2010.  I'll tell him about you, and if he's ready for a project I am sure he will contact you.

GSDNewbie did you ever find a dog for her? I'm going to check around here since I'm just three hours away from you, Dickson is about 30 some odd miles west of Nashville. I'll let you know what I find out.
