"Remember every thing has its own character and that must never be broken for that is the Dog."

How is this substantially different from any other type of obedience?

Dogs will piss in your house, chew furniture and bite your face.

Unfortunately, behavior like this has to be stopped long before now. To stop it now may still be possible, but would take a long time to do correctly and, any desensitization program may not work. Pups need brushing and nail trimming very young to learn it is not something to fear. Some dogs have a lower threshold about being touched, in general, and some get phobic of tools used around them if they are not exposed to them in a non-threatening way early on. By early, I mean handling from birth and at 3-4 weeks, even though they might not need brushing, doing it gently. And nails do need to be trimmed for moma's sake by around that age. The likelihood is that this dog as a pup was either frightened by similar actions or never had any such interactions with humans. Her natural temperament escalates that into her present behavior. At 10 wks old, with a firm hand and doing this when the dog was very sleepy, with desensitization techniques which start slowly, done very long term, and done correctly, might have fixed this. At this point, without some heavy hand, the behavior is unlikely to go away and this is something that may also evolve into something else.

Dogs should NEVER feel they are in charge. If they do, eventually, yes, they will end up in a situation where they get into trouble and bite someone. Steve knows she acts this way and it will forever be his responsibility to make sure she doesn't have the chance to act this way with someone else. I could give a recent example of a dog in my care whose family did the wrong things when the dog objected to certain actions they made, and the end result is that the dog now does not tolerate certain actions and people are getting bitten.

In the end, such issues are related to temperament but proper environmental stimuli can often overcome such issues.

Good luck Steve.

Some dogs may have had some sort of traumatic experience, some dogs simply don't like to be brushed.

If it were my dog I would simply not allow this behavior. I would hope the dog's "character" is not so fragile.

How long did you say you have been woring with dogs?

My bitch was kind of like that as a pup she was more like I can take it for  a few minutes then its time to retrieve or bite something. She is now 2 and some better but still doesn't like her stomach and under chest done very much . I make her let me , but it has to be where its just myself and her, if i try it with others near by she focus on them and get aggressive toward them. I can do anything to her as long as no one else is around.   He r nails where never a problem. I use to think that the furminator tickled her belly ......She is in every since of the word a great dog though way to good for me ...

My Caleb is much like Sue's Arkane. He simply has never enjoyed being touched. Can I brush him? Yeah, but he doesn't love it and squirms around and just plain tries to refuse sometimes. He's a hard dog, and I have corrected him pretty seriously for this and he is by no means broken, lol. I don't force him to do very much, but if I need to clip his nails, then damn it, I'm clipping his nails. He doesn't make all the rules. I get to make one or two.

As to Elkoorr's dog, his mother is the same way. I have had to correct her as well, and she is by no means broken either.

We need to keep in mind that these are predators. They are intelligent animals who will get away with whatever they think they can get away with. Barring a serious trauma causing fear of a particular activity, I see no reason not to correct for unwanted behavior. If a dog is such that correcting will shut it down, well..............that's not a dog I'd probably bother brushing;-)

Sporty
For you 2 minutes for the rest 60 years, and done okay. What is this big issue some of you are trying to make out of this, So some of you think it intolerable that a dog does not like being brushed or combed and because you are the pack Leader as you like to put it you say this is unacceptable, You would be laughed at over here  if you came out with that to some of the Guys,
As for temperament issues she has none and i do not call this a temperament issue at all
Now for some of you who tell to there dogs to do something and must be obeyed regardless of what it is tell me this and what i say is correct.
When i take my dogs out to relieve themselves. and if i say have a Pee the Dog will pee within 10 seconds of saying it
If i say have a Crap the Dog will also Crap on command, NOW' you Guys above do your Dogs Crap on demand for if you are that clever that everything you ask of it then the Dog should Crap on demand, mine do not once but every time, Crude it may be, True it is So do not make a big deal out of this simple question for i see where it is going with some by the time you have finished i will have a hyped up dog which is totally out of control threads have a way of working that way
Oh, and by the way i have given her corrections which would take the head off some of you Guys with no avail she simply does not like the combing

Steve, have you tried to blindfold her or position yourself so she can't see what you are doing, or something like that? If I hide what I'm doing from my dog he reacts totally different. In a different situation I had a dog that was impossible for me to clip the nails. Eventually years later the dog would tolerate it without the soft  cloth type muzzle, but you are right he simply did not like it.

Don't know why you'd object to a soft cloth muzzle just as an aide for you to get her to tolerate the brushing without interfering.
