The dog I'm talking about has a strong, dominant personality and in true fashion. If he deems a correction unfair, he will let me know. He has a few quirks as all dogs do, I could try to stomp it out with corrections, but he would just fight me and it would escalate each time. Regardless if he wants his nails cut or not they get cut. I accept that he doesn't like his feet touched, so I muzzle him (he is neutral to the muzzle) put him in a down and cut his nails, but he growls the whole time. When it's over he's good as gold, why? Couldn't tell you, it is what it is.
My dog isn't superior to me Jen, we have a good working relationship and understands who's in control, but with him it's a fine line. His character is very strong and if he could he would rule the roost. My guess is you haven't owned a dog like this and don't understand what they bring to the table.

That's what my guy was like - he respected my authority, but only because he knew I would impose it no matter what. Otherwise, he would have taken over the bed and I'd have been the one sleeping on the floor. Just something you have to deal with fairly and consistently when living with a dominant, territorial dog.

Is it that easy to make an assesment over the internet, never meeting the dog? Dog goes anywhere and everywhere, no environmental issues, indifferent to people and reiable off leash around people. His protection is solid and he brings fight. The feet thing is his quirk.

LMAO. Keep guessing.
Grit??? Sounds to me like your average pushy, dominant "beta" type, trying to promote himself as a true "alpha" to a handler he doesn't respect.
Knowing you are in control is a far cry from respecting you, and my feeling is that if your dog tries to bite you over menial daily tasks, you just might have a teensy problem in the respect and/or bonding department. Just sayin'........................................
To each his own, though. There are people who think that kind of dog is strong, a lot of them, actually. I think it's a weak bully. That's simply my opinion, unless it is an adult dog you just imported and you have not bonded with the dog yet. We have a difference of opinion. It's clear to me how very bipolar the issue is when phrases like "no environmental issues, indifferent to people and reiable off leash around people," are seen as positive attributes used to justify a dog's temperament, when those qualities, to me, are the bare minimum a dog must possess in order to be worth feeding.
I much prefer a quiet, strong, serious dog with strong character, who does not feel the need to lash out at his master over a necessary evil that he may not particularly like. I call these lashing out types unstable and weak. Again, this is simply a difference in definition and opinion. 9 out of 10 would be fooled into thinking this dog is strong. I'd just hate to be in a bad situation w/a dog like that.
This is why I started breeding my own dogs. What some call strong, I wouldn't waste food on. As someone I respect says "it doesn't cost any less to feed a bad one than a good one."
