just a side-note to those who feed raw,

i do believe that feeding raw is healthy.......if done right, however, don't be foolish enough to believe that you don't have to worry about  what's in it when you feed raw.  you do!!!  any commercially grown meat may contain steroids or growth hormones, drugs that animal was treated with, parasites, bacteria, poisons or chemicals that animal was exposed to, et, etc.  in short, unless that meat source was raised organically, there is no guarantee that its carcass is free from the above......and more.  heck, even human food is subject to all these things.  every year tons and tons of ground beef has to be disposed of because it is contaminated with e.coli.  i just don't think its a good idea to feel overly secure because one feeds raw.  there are certainly dangers there as well.

Another note about Raw:

Being a Vet Tech for 10+ years, we have seen FAR too many puppy buyers from those breeders who tell them to continue the Raw Food just about die from Pancreatitis. To feed a raw died is to know EXACTLY what you are feeding, why you are feeding it, what it does to help your dog, what type of meet or organ it is and where it came from. I also have to comment that when I was raising my older boy as a potential Guide Dog and he was only able to eat raw from a well known dog food company, his stools were so little & dry that I had to suppliment his feeding with Metimucil. They finally agreed to let me put him on granuals because he was having such a problem.

I have tried just about every food out there, we landed on Canidae with the back up of Nature's Recipe (if I couldn't get the Canidae). I have been feeding this for about 3 years now without any problems with weight ( gain or loss), stool is always normal, no allergies, the price seems to be climbing so I have to watch where I go to get it but it does seem prices are rising with all the companies. Also, I have dogs from 8 weeks to 13 years eating it.

When you find the perfect diet, PLEASE let me know!

Euaknuba. I had the same experience Molly did with Canidae ALS. The dogs needed more food per day, pooped out more than they ate, soft to sloppy stools, dry coats. the only one still on Canidae is Carol, (Platinum formula) becase he gains too much weight on Eukanuba products. He tolerates it better than the other dogs did, but I supplement him with Show Stopper for coat condition. I may try a few other foods in future, but for now its back to the Euk I've fed for decades, glad not to have to deal with stinky, runny poop.

Canidae and Addictions Kangaroo & Apple. I add Steve's Real Dog food(raw frozen) beef. Whenever I find chicken or beef hearts in the supermarket, I supplment the kibble with that. My dog loves the kangaroo kibble. I had switched to Innova's Evo red meat. I LOVED the idea of no grains and all that lovely red meat kibble. However, while stools were small and firm, they were literally black. So, I switched (back ) to Canidae. I have noticed no issues with dry skin, but that may be due to supplementing with raw meat. :-) Nia

Best value for your dollar in "my opinion"

1. Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice   ------no corn period-----my area a 40lb bag is $19.98

2. Chicken Soup(also made by Diamond)------no corn period-----my area a 35lb bag is $24.00

Hands down the best value for dry dog food. Do your homework read the ingrediants label. If corn is in the first 3 ingrediants then that dog food is trash in "my opinion"

With my first GSD, I fed her Purina Dog Chow, as that was what her owner had been giving her, and it was being heavily advertised on TV. I soon noticed that she'd loose interest in it when the bag got down about  halfway or 3/4 of the way to the bottom, so I switched to a better quality of food. I eventually wound up feeding her Purina Pro Plan, as she was a very picky eater, and had numerous health issues, probably as a result of being fed very poorly before I got her. She had to be PTS at 9 years of age, due to arthritis in her spine.

My next GSD got Performatrin (Pet Valu house brand) Supreme for most of her life. She made it to 14 with very few health problems (most of them were caused by her habit of eating things she shouldn't, like rotten compost or the neighbour's garbage!) At one time when I was poor and single, I had her on the cheap Pet Value house brand (Health Diet, I think it was called) and she would eat her own stools. I switched to Performatrin, and she stopped doing that.

My Nenz lost weight every time I fed him anything other than Iams. I recently switched him and Spunky to Purina ONE and their weights are both good on it. However both coats pretty lackluster. Thinking about switching to something else..........

I have used all the brands that people have mentioned on this site. For me I feed Exceed Lanb and Rice during the summer months (lower protien and fat) and in the winter months I feed Exceed Chicken and Rice (higher protien and fat). My five GSD do great on it. It can only be purchased at Sams Wholesale Clubs. Sells for about $22.00 for 44 pounds. Stools are small, skin is great with less shedding, maintains weight. I feed with warm water, but can be fed dry too.
