I just rec'd my large size Original Lectro-Kennel heating pad., KH 1020, 80 watts.
It seems that there is also an optional Lectro Temp-Control KH 1400 to reduce the heating. It says it is for whelping application.
Do I need this Temp-Control in my whelping box? It will measure 48"x48" . Will the pups and mom have enough space to move in and out of the pad.
If I need such a control, how do I know want to dial to?

My pups have gotten along fine w/o it for years now.

Don't step on them yourself. They don't last more than a year - especialy if you abuse them. I like to put a towel over mine so that the puppies are not "swimming" over it. They love them, the mom may not like to lay on the matt, don't force her. Her boobs get warm enough for the pups that are nursing to keep them pretty warm.

I have had mine now for about 3 years--but like kimmelot said take care of them and I dont leave mine in longer than 3 weeks.---I put a blanket over mine and the pups will sometimes all be on it and then just a few here and there. I have never used the temp, control--never needed it.
