Donnerstorm

by Donnerstorm on 27 September 2011 - 13:09

I just had to post this and share.  My guys love to push things around like horse balls, galvanized metal food and water buckets pretty much anything they can move, as I'm sure everyone's do.  I always worry about the fact that they are chewing on them hurting their teeth and of course how safe is it to eat pieces of a galvanized metal pail.  I went grocery shopping yesterday and pumpkins were on sale.  I had thought on several occasions before they wouldn't make bad toys so I bought everybody a pumpkin. They LOVED them too bad I couldn't find batteries for the camera.  They had a ball rolling them around flipping them in the air and the best part was when they had sufficiently demolished the pumpkins they just ate them.  Thought I would share for everyone that has a gsd that acts like mine, no more worrying about what they are doing to their digestive track with all the non food items.  It was soo funny to watch! Next year when we plant the garden there will definately be a huge part of it dedicated to pumpkins for the guys to play with!

Donnerstorm,   Our pack love eating pumpkins..and they are good for them unlike dangerous toys. They will carry them around in their mouths and try smashing them on the ground....what a hoot!
You'll  have a garden full of pumpkins next year!

Donnerstorm,
Common sense would tell you metal is not good for a dog to chew on, mine really like wood but that's not great either.
Pumpkins are fine, mine like to destroy basket balls, they chew them up but do not eat them.
Nothing wrong with a large bone for chewing.
Small objects are not good, balls or toys.
I'm not fond of raw hide, this they love though.
There is a big difference between what they will chew on and what they should eat, mine love most garden vegetables and fruit.
My one bitch digs roots and eats them, dunno what she prefers and not sure whats more fun the digging or the roots themselves.
Anyway don't let your dogs eat plastics or metals.

Moons.

Moons, are you seriously thinking I just let my dogs eat metal or that I'm shocked that metal isn't good for them??? It was the humerous part of the post, I've been in gsds for 13 yrs now and I'm a nurse I'm pretty sure I didn't need you to point out metal is not a good thing for them to ingest. Yes my dogs do periodically chew on their galvanized metal dishes and I replace them or I find a more creative solution.  The post was just a for fun I saw a pumpkin and thought hmm bet they would have fun with that as opposed to eating metal. If you'll excuse me now I have some lead paint I need to go chew on.laugh

  This is a good thread

You would both be surprised how many people still think it is ok to put toys in a crate to occupy a dogs boredom

NOT

PUT raw knuckle bone or nothing

DOG must learn a kennel or crate is for them to rest and or eat a bowl of food and then take all things out except the dog

No collars either.

Pups can have a knuckle bone   no rawhide. Rawhide comes apart and dogs tend to swallow hunks..choking can occur on anything

Best the dog learn  crate is safe and a haven of joy and comfort. ALL Dogs chew when you least expect. DO  not think your dog won't chew

The very day you think that you will get a very unfortunate surprise and it may not be one you will like to remember

Some dogs never have chewed but very rare are they indeed. I will not chance it.
Mine have gone thru many metal stainless steel bucket.. Bear got them off the sides one way or another and he hit them long enough the handles came off..

THE cowclip holding the ss buckets on the wire were still intact..the bucket handles come apart.
Then they chew .

Last fall I had pumpkins(uncarved) on my deck for fall...nobody touched them. But once it was time to take my arrangement down- I threw the pumpkins and started a game out of it. it was so hilarious! Planted a row this year- I got 9 from the row.....highly recommend it! Added bonus is that they are very easy to grow
