Do most of you give your adult dogs vitamins and/or supplements? I've fed Blitz the Royal Canin GSD adult food and have never given him anything additional and am wondering if I should. Thanks.

My gang eats the Royal Canin with the addition of a deydrated raw food. The only supplements I give are Vertex (seems to help them tolerate the heat better when they're working) and Synovi G3. I think if they're fed high quality food, they really shouldn't need vitamins or a whole bunch of supplements...

If one is feeding a good quality food, it is unnecessary to also be feeding vitamins for most dogs. An exception would be if a dog has some illness where they need extra. I think it is important to also note that giving too much of any vitamin can cause trouble too. Flygirl55 is exactly right and extreme care should be taken when providing additional vitamins and supplements. It only takes a little extra with some vitamins and minerals to be over the needed amount and then you can have problems related to toxicity. Also, I think it is not a good idea to be giving human vitamins in general. If you insist, give a type formulated for dogs. Humans and dogs do not have the same nutritional needs......

hi hodie, thanx for the concern, but i've been doing this for atleast 8 years now. had 5 german shepherds,in the past 15 yrs. both my oldest lived until they were 13. my oldest male is now 11 1/2 and is doing extremely well. and each one of them never got that old dog look. i can send you photo's if you'd like of the 2 females that are gone that were taken within the month of them being put down. they were put down because i didn't know back then about raw feeding and quality foods, and my first shepherd had severe dysplasia as a pup,we did a total hip replacement on her at 2 1/2 and Remi developed D.M. at age 7, and still lasted until 2 weeks ago. 13 and 1 month
