In general - I believe that GSDs don't make the best pet dogs.
For example, in my case, when people see one of my mature, well trained, well behaved, 'good looking' (proud mom) dogs, they think "I want one of those", believing that it is a result of the breed and not all the hard work that went into it. They want a puppy that will automatically turn out like that. And one thing I know for sure is that they will not. I always say, that "intelligent dogs learn easily BUT are very difficult to train". Mine seem to be always trying to figure out how to outthink me...
Sound mind and good temperament dogs will make a good family dog, loyal and protective BUT always a GSD, i.e. requiring owners who are good experienced handlers keeping them under control at all times. In my experience, most dog owners desirous of a good pet would be better suited with an 'easier going' breed.

GSD make wonderful pets for the right people. Both me and my hubby think that our GSDs are the best pets we ever had. I have two little boys - 5 and 4, two cats and we all live in 'perfect' harmony. My heart grows when I see my boys with my dogs, my heart grows when I see my dogs gently approaching my cats and licking them...
They are the biggest, fuzziest Teddy Bears at home BUT they are always going to be GSDs for anybody else.
Too many people buy GSDs for the wrong reasons. And too many breeders fail in selling the right pups to the right people. I agree that it's breeders responsibility to find right owners however I've heard my share of untruth from buyers... One of the reasons why I wouldn't want to be responsible for several litters a year...

Based on your story, your breeder was clearly a "bad breeder" from start to finish. She made false claims about herself and her dogs, plus she turned the other way and shifted blame when one of her pups had a defect. I feel really bad for you and what happened to your dog. I hope that you are able to find a good breeder and that your next pup will be very healthy and bring you much happiness.

Also Niesa i have to agree with Kitkat german shepheds truly do make great family companions as well as pets i have been brought up with german shepherds all my life and love them they win my heart there is no other breed that really does i do understand what u mean by german shepherds should be with owners that know wat they are doing bcs of certain things i do understand that and ur right but i also agree with kitkatt german shepherds should be with responsible owners and ones that know the breed before they get them and if they are going to have one just they should know everything about them and know that they have to be trained the right way and things like that but i truly love german shepherds there is no breed out there for me.
