Just wanted to how good Pyrental Pamoate is for new born puppies for first deworming. Usually, all these anthelmentics are considered not very safety in terms of their bad effects. Is it safe to use Pyrental Pamoate on new borns or what are the other options. Dont forget that I am in China where we have very limited options when it comes to choosing deworming aggents.

My vet has always recommended pyrantel for my pups. He gives me the pyrental and I worm them at 3 and 6 and 9 weeks old, before they go to their new home. I have personally never had anything go wrong with them as far as side effects and so forth. I think pyrental is actually very popular for worming, at least by me, but like I stated above I don't worm them until they are 3 weeks old and go from there.

I also have a question about worming puppies. I just wormed my puppies for the first time with Nemex 2 when they turned 3 weeks old. Is it normal after the first worming for a puppy to get diarreah?(I know that spellings got to be wrong) Thanks in advance. Mysti

Pyrantel pamoate is considered to be safe for use in puppies at 7 days of age, if there is reason to believe that the dam is carrying a significant hookworm burden due to lack of effective treatment prior to whelping. In such cases, pyrantel pamoate can be given at week one, and then every other week for 5 to 6 weeks. For basic roundworm concerns, it can be started at 2 weeks of age and then at weeks 3, 4, 6 and 8. All of this hinges on giving the *correct dose for the weight of the pups*. It is important to know the concentration of the product being used--some products contain 2.27 mg per ml of suspension, while others contain as much as 50 mg per ml (Strongid T is one of the latter). The basic dosage for pyrantel pamoate is 5 mg per kg of body weight--so it's necessary to know the actual weight of the pups at the time of treatment in order to measure out the correct amount. Pyrantel does a very good job on roundworms, a pretty good job with hookworms, but nothing at all for whipworms or tapeworms in dogs.

hexe, Well Said, and the only thing I would add is that Pyrantel Pamoate is probably the most forgiving product out there when it comes to overdoseing. Keeping in mind that giving the correct amount is always important, It's just nice to know that this product is pretty forgiving if your dose happens to be off a bit. Mysti, NO... It is not normal, The only time I see that reaction in the shelter is if the dogs are horribly infested with parasites and the killing of them takes such a toll on the dog that it causes all sorts of "other" side effects, ie. Vomiting, Diahreah, loss of appetitie, depression, and most commonly with "bad infestations" is Bloating. As the parasites die in the gut and release gas by deterioration some dogs who are badly infested will actually bloat, dogs will bad infestations are usually lightly dosed for 3 days in a row with Pyrantel Pamoate as it is such a forgiving product and seems to be the easiest on the dogs system, The kill on the parasites is not as devistating in a single dose and seems to not make such a mess of they're system compared to a single dose kill. When I do get one that responds to deworming with diahreah I will usually follow up with some Probios(Probiotic) to help restore "order" in the gut. Some use Yogurt for this. Suhailf, Pyrantel is deemed one of the safest products available to deworm puppies, My vet reccomends first deworm at 3 wks of age, However if your vet feels you need to deworm at 7 days of age, Pyrantel is definately the safest product that I am aware of to use. As Hexe pointed out it is important to know the consentration of the product your using so that the dosage is correct.
