I'm shopping for a Fur saver (his first one) for Cisco and was wondering what everyone prefers for the thickness and length of the links (3 or 4 mm long or short links)......I also noticed they come in different finishes......Has anyone experienced tarnishing on the coat from any of the finishes?
I'm leaning towards the Herm Springer Black Stainless steel (since Cisco's Black). Does anyone have the black one? How does the finish wear?
Thank you,
Cheri

I started with the chrome silver. It began to tarnish quickly.
Then I got the non stainless black one. It is now silver from wear.
Finally I got the stainless steel silver. It still looks brand new. It is the long links, and it still breaks the fur. Although not as bad as most collars.

Any collar will break fur if your dog wears it for the entire day or longer, but the fursaver is the best option.
The density of collars not made out of stainless steel is less, so if you have a very powerful dog, he/she might be able to break it. Another advantage of stainless steel is that it doesn't rust in humid climates.
However, I use it mainly for working with my dog and take it off when my dog is at home or in a crate.

TingiesandTails.....
Cisco's regular collar with his tags is rolled leather and so far it hasn't broken any hair around his neck (no collar line in his fur)......However, I keep it loose enough to (just barely) slip over his head.
KellyJ....I figured like most chrome collars the fur saver would also tarnish.
VKGSDs...is your collar the Herm Springer?
So why short vs long links? Are the longer links less likely to break the fur?

I have 3 of the Herm Sprengers, went stainless steel, because I get so many dogs in that are tough, and one tug with a regular choker usually breaks them, I don't worry about the stainless steel. I don't keep them on either, except some of the rescues that I have to catch quickly, they are too elusive and strong. They slip out of regular collars, and break a normal choker...
I love them, but watch out for catching your fingers in the bigger links, while trying to grab at a tough dog. You WILL get your fingers caught and it hurts like H***!!!! Can break a finger easily too.

yes, the 4 mm are better for the coat - the 3mm makes the coat break easier...
