My friend bought a very expensive, very well bred pup out of a VA sire, or so she thought. The puppy has Chronic Kidney Disease and the prognosis is fatal. The breeder she got him from will not replace the pup, but is more than willing to take her money for another one. I said she should put the word out on this guy and his program. Has anyone ever heard of this happening to such a young dog and should she let people know about him? All comments welcomed.

Your post raises questions that require answering before any judgment should be made: 1. Define "very expensive." 2. Was the pup's health guaranteed against any and all chronic/fatal illness or some limited health issues such as hip dysplasia, and if so, for how long? 3. Was there a writen sales contract, and, if so, what were the terms?

Vette, I had a 10 month old GSD diagnosed with CRF (not of my breeding). I was devastated, this dog was to be my search and rescue dog. She was the only one out of three repeat breedings to have CRF. I researched online, talked to several vets, and debated on what I should do. I am happy to say that at 5.5 years old, my CRF GSD is SAR. Her life has been completely normal for a GSD. The only thing we are seeing now is an increased need to urinate. She probably only has another year or two, but she has accomplished so much in that time. I didn't do anything differently with her, than if she hadn't been diagnosed. She eats raw, gets a bit more supplements than my other dogs, but overall, her health is great! About the breeder...I find that sad. I would hope that any breeder would replace or refund on a dog that had CRF, if...it was not environmentally produced.

p59, The 2 month old pup was $3500.00. No guarantees. He claims that he won't offer a guarantee because they have no control how the puppy is raised. Obviously, this is a congenital problem, not environmental. I have had "contracts" in the past and most breeders will replace the dog, but they want the dog back. Personally, I would never do that. So, the fact that she didn't have a guarantee, was not a big deal to me. The issue at hand here, is she is devasted. The ultra sounds shows kidneys that did not form properly. The pup from the time she got it drank alot of water, and then at 3 months started having bladder infections that never cleared up. Thats when she went to the specialist. Just a very sad situation,

i think if you frequenttly visit this or any other GSD forum -- let alone the experiences you may come across within your own circles -- you will have a rude awakening in regards to how many high-end , even VA dogs that are produced that have seriuos health problems -- just the other day i made a post in like on this site and dicussed , im my opinion , the detrinmental and devastating effects the over amount of linebreedings have had in the GSD !! i asked for a movement on behalf of the SV to not allow any dogs bred by the year 2008 that have line- breeding within a 5 generation to not be allowed to be registered -- with of course more emphasis on outcrossings !! you know --in 5 minutes ..for some reason.. the thread was discontinued on this forum -- -- --it is almost impossible to fight human nature especially when dogs are sold for 250 thousand to one million -- and bottom line -- that is what it will come down to -- BTW .. shouldn't to a degree matter what you pay for a pup -- the value is within the pup itself for it is a preciuos living thing -- and your pup even if you paid five hundred dollars is the most valuable in all the world ... because -- it is your pup !! so even if you paid one thousand for it -- one still should hope for a healthy well bred pup --

Vette, There are alot of things to be done for a dog with CRF, including specialty foods, supplemnts, etc. Nothing compares to just good, loving care though. As far as the breeder, if there were no guarantees, then there isnt much for your friend to do. Is it right? nope. BUT, both buyer and seller entered in knowing that there were no promises, so the seller cant really be put at blame for not doing anything. In short, he doesnt have too. Doesn't make it o.k. for him to be that way, but he is allowed. I wish your friend many happy years with her dog, that she obviously loves. Best of luck to them!

I have a female that had chronic bladder infections, She was on Meds all the time and if you read the disclosures on the meds, effects the liver and kidneys. I got very concerened about her being on this stuff so much. So I took her off of it and gave her cranberry capsules, apple cider vinegar pills, and vitiam C, for 7-10 days, took her off of it and left her alone for 1 week and then took her to the vet for her recheck, clear of crystals, bacteria, ph level fine. I now give her this for 2 days a month. I have not had a bladder infection since. I am not saying the meds caused the kidney problem, I am saying you have a kidney problem, you may want to try this for the bladder, instead of irrating the kidney any futher.
