So what would be a fair stud fee for a SchH 1, ZVV 1, SVV 1 dog who was just recently imported? I inquired about a recently imported dog with SVV 1 and they want a $1000.00 stud fee. TOO MUCH! $ 500.00 tops, just my opinion. I know that most owners of dogs who had been and going to the world team don't even charge this much. For example Mike Diehl for Basco or Eick and Gary Hanran for Bastin vom Kokeltal only charge a $ 750.00 stud fee. These dogs have proven them selfs and are high titled and still stay under a $ 1000.00.

Christopher, I tend to agree with you. At that price for a SchH1 dog I think that dog may remain without female companions for some time! And, he could very well be capable of achieving a high-scoring SchH3 title with pronounced courage and have the conformation required for eventual VA status. But, that is not how he is titled today. It would be hard for the owner of this dog to convince me of the worth of this dog when there are so many others with full titles, consistent high scores, and many excellent progeny. Bob-O

Get A REAL DOG & Vomfelsonhof, I gotta agree with on this one. I haven't gotten into the breeding much but it makes more sense to me with what you said. I charge $1,000 stud fee for my dog whose a Tom son. He's only an SVVI right now but I intend to take him further. If I only charged $500 stud fee I'd literally have every GSD bitch in town on my doorstep and that's not what I want. If you're willing to pay $1,000 then you equally have something good to bring to the table for breeding. Also, everyone is looking for different things when breeding, or purchasing pups and dogs. Titles are very important to some, others don't see titles to mean much to them. And in all fairness...the GSD is an intelligent dog by nature, it is the handler and trainers that make the dog outstanding. There's valid points on both sides but I personally did not base my decission to buy my dog because of a title. It was most important for me to know he was absolutely stable in nerves and rock solid in temperment to put in a house with little kids.

It is the sweat and hard work that's what entitles to a stud fee of this height. We all can import dogs and stud them out for what ever amount, that's fine. My point is people who don't know nothing about certain lines import dogs which is the latest FAD, title or not and start seeing $$$$$! I know that no one who is in the sport would spend a $1000.00 on a stud who is only a SchH 1, Zvv 1 or what ever. I have titled bitches and I know no matter what line the dog is out of, I certainly would not spend a $1000.00. My bitches have Crok, Titus, Cak in them and are all titled SchH 1 or higher. Just my humble oppinion!

AgarPhranicniStraze1, I know what you mean about the low-quality females lining up at the door. For example, one (1) of my males is untitled, but genetically-sound, of proper proportion and old world conformation-my favourite type. He does not have what it takes to do Schutzhund sport, but he is an overall nice guy with a decent COMPANION temperament. He represents what so many people want in a companion, but not sport dog. When we are at an A.K.C. conformation show I am occassionally approached by someone whose eye he catches, and they ask about the stud fee. "Oh, $500.00," I say, when in fact it would be one-half of this if they had a female that displayed quality in their lineage (No Continental Kennel Club crap times A.K.C.) because that is the maximum that he would be worth as a stud. Now the other male has a V-3 (F.C.I.) rating and is a very hard-core and correct West German show-line dog and of course he costs more for use as a stud. In my opinion he is a $500.00 stud dog. Crap can be presented to us, and we all have the right to refusal. Some of us have to ask a price that will be questioned for its validity, as we have questions about the prospective mating females as well. Your point is well taken, as far as I am concerned. Bob-O

Personaly I have never been interested in a dog with over a $1000 stud fee. Maybe they are show line people who ask for more since showline dogs usually sell for more $. Maybe I have just been lucky with who I inquire about???

To an extent I agree this to be somewhat true for those that go off and purchase import dogs because they feel it's an opportunity to make big $$$. I can tell you this much I have 4 kids 3 of which are girls and I couldn't make a living off breeding or studding even if I had people wanting to pay the price. Why is it always about $$$ when we all get into these topics? On another note, not everyone that buys these dogs is looking for a sport dog. When I hear someone has a good dog (and many of the people on here do)but they are selling their pups cheap and their stud fees are relatively low for the quality of the dogs it tends to lead me to believe that it's all about the benjamin's ($$$) and selling or studding in volume is a business rather than adding something exceptional to the breed. And that's just my humbling opinnion. lol

Oh and on another note to put some thought behind this theory....when someone sells pups for $1,500 a pop is it the titles that solely justify the price??? No. Also, without a good male and I'm not talking just titles, without a good progeny the $1,500 price per pup can not be justified. Why should the stud owner only be warranted a very small fraction of what the bitches owner stands to profit when the stud dog helped produce it equally as well?? I understand there is expenses to the actual breeder but by far on a mid to large size litter a killing would be made. Let's try to keep it fair if it's really not about the money. There's lots of dogs to choose from and I guess the bottom line is what is it worth to you for what you are trying to achieve??? The door open and close for us all and we are free to say thanks but no thanks, no hard feelings!

by Kougar on 19 December 2006 - 20:12

If it is not about money - why does it matter how much the bitches owner "makes" off a litter????? A schh1 male who is imported is not going to have any females standing in line unless the female owners are selling pups in the newspaper on Sundays! People in the breed seriously and knowledgabley are not going to be overly interested in an unknown dog for any stud fee -$200 - $500 let alone $1000 just because the dog is from a sire is a good producer....more than likely there are a few dozen of that dogs half brothers with more accomplishments and a better bottom side available! It amazes me that people go buy a dog and instantly become breeders and experts and expect to make a ton of money without ever training or trialing or some never even having SEEN a trial or a show!!!!!!!!!!!!! The stud dog owner spends a few hours with the bitch owner, and signs off on a few forms - responsiblity is done - over....his life does not go on hold for 4 months waiting for pups...his dog is not at risk giving birth...will the stud dog owner compensate the bitch owner if she dies???? Will he pay for the vet bills on the litter or the bitch during whelp? Is he going to sit up all night and wait for pups, clean up the mess, take care of pups if they are ill? Spend 8 weeks cleaning up puppy poop???? What if there are 2000 in vet bills - and 2 live pups....and they are coats or monorchids???? Even if htere is a decent sized healthy litter, there is no "killing" if a litter is raised and cared for properly unless it is a mass production operation!!!!!!!!!! If it was not about the money for a stud fee...then stud owners would be begging people with good titled females to breed to those unproven well bred dogs for free - and that is probably happens more often than people with good females paying a $1000 stud fee to a young titled, non koered male who has been on a trial field once and retired and sold.
