As seen everyone has a different idea of what a Good dog is...Therefore it's hard to agree on what a good dog is...but...A Good German Shepherd should be one that can first and foremost...WORK...then the other things are what YOU want...

Although I enjoy Schutzhund...I first want a dog to be a Balanced...Good Working Dog...then they can do Schutzhund or what ever you'd like...But I think people's priorities are in the wrong order...We all have our priorities...but what order do you want them...I mean do you want Color...Size...what do you want first...

I also think that training and training methods have become very good...In fact they've become so good that even mediocre dogs are able to do well in training and even be titled in Schutzhund...I think this is very good...But it seems to give people the wrong impression that these dogs are good for breeding and are good for the breed...Nothing could be farther from the truth...

So many German Shepherds don't have the natural aggression that is necessary for the breed to keep a High Standard...I think too much of the natural drives have been bred out of the dogs to obtain other attributes...but sacrificing natural drives for other things such as a particular Color...or Size...or whatever is totally wrong and sending out beloved breed in the wrong direction...

I know of no one who puts color first on their priority list.

yeah, blitzen!  dingo vh gero.  my favorite from all time.  i think he was as close to a perfect dog as there has ever been.  he and ajax vh dexel
were both known to pass on true working ability but dingo also had the structure to go with it.
paul, i love seffe in a pedigree as well as her brother sirk.
i agree with Qman, bob, that working ability should be priority #1.  all else will fall into place--structure, health, temperament, etc.
to the original poster, eddy, i am not sure why you have chosen this dog as your ideal.  maybe you have seen him in action.  first, i will say
that i do like his sire line.  champ barenfang was an incredible dog, however much i liked his character, his production was less than it
could have been.  he produced more than his fair share of hip problems.  then one has to look to the dam's line.  his motherline is seriously
lacking.  in my opinion, the dam's motherline is of utmost importance.  there is nothing solid here---no evidence of consistent production.
i will offer a friendly bit of advice just incase you are hoping to buy progeny of this dog or do some breeding yourself: pair that excellent
sire line up with a good solid dam line with good production history & you will have success.  (at least 3 generations of good producing
females)

I am not familiar with the OP's ultimate GSD. I prefer Dingo's type as he looks more athletic to me, not as overdone.  The trend today seems to be heading in the direction of breeding for an overdone dog with a big Akita-type head, an exaggerated stop, a  short, heavy muzzle with hanging flews, and thick bodies. I haven't been in this breed a long time, but I have seen what that trend has done to a few other working breeds and it's not good. This applies to all lines, not only the show lines.

I like the photo Paul posted a lot. I especially like this bitch's short hocks, good feet,  and correct rear angulation and balance. She looks like an athlete. That probably doesn't matter as much to the WL people as working ability, but without good conformation a working dog isn't going to last long and may never achieve its full potential. Heart and attitude mean a lot, but it's not all there is.

Anatomically and functionally excellent is what serious breeders strive for!
