Hello-- I am new to this site and would like some advise. We are looking to buy a GSD puppy in the spring and in the meantime, I am trying to do the right thing by doing my homework first. I am only looking for pet quality--we have no plans to breed or show, so maybe these boards are not the right place to look > In my research I've found 2 or 3 breeders locally that I am interested in. Could you kind folks here give any input on the following breeders? I any comments, good or bad, will be considered thoughtfully. The breeders I am looking at are: Loyalville Kennels Jenloren Kennel Sunrise Shepherds Thanks in advance from a newbie! Dina

Awww c'mon guys... my folks ALWAYS had a miniature poodle in residence along with a German Shepherd. It helped keep the GSD in line.
First thing you want to do, in my opinion, is talk to the breeder. Know what you're looking for, know what you don't want. Ask a ton of questions and expect to be asked a ton of questions in return. If the breeder doesn't ask you a lot of questions, move on to the next one on your list!
Ask for references, and the REAL secret to references is to CALL THEM. You would be amazed how many people don't!
If you can visit the kennels, do that. The dad might not be on premises, but ask if there's some way you can meet him. Meet the mom, definitely. Play with her, get to know her. Watch how she is with the litter. Look for things like a clean area for the pups, plenty of water available, are the pups themselves clean? Are the pups socialized with other dogs and lots of people? Are they played with? Do they feel comfortable with a leash? Are they crate trained at all? A good breeder will be happy to spend as much time as you need, even if you never spend a nickle with them.
Good luck! Puppy hunting is fun.
